@beamish Y'know, as much as I love the Stranges I have, a cloth cape on him would be one of those things I'd just love to see. One of my biggest struggles with the good doctor is ROM under that cape and a cloth cape would fix that.
I don't even like cloth capes - at all - and I agree with this.
Strange Tales wave, with Nightmare wearing the cloth cape. 😀 That's my call.
Dan and Dwight were on the Toymigos podcast tonight to talk about the Cabal 3-pack. They talked about the Dark Avengers a bit and Dan alluded to them possibly finishing the rest of the team since there are fans in the Legends production team. One of the hosts specifically brought up a new Daken as a character that needs a redo, and Dwight said if they were to do Ares it’d be on a newer body since they’ve retired the previous one. I’m hoping they really do go for it since we’re a decent way into the lineup now with Iron Patriot, Sentry and Marvel Boy.
This is what really bugs me. Let's make figures because people on our design/marketing team want them. Just like Jesse Falcon wanted that lame Galactus Doom head instead of another Herald.
How about focusing on making figures the collective ML fanbase has been asking about for years. Just look at any Top 10 polls on any site for suggestions before going to your co-workers.
That assumes the two are exclusive. The idea that what the team wants and what fans want are incompatible, I mean. It makes complete sense to do the rest of the Dark Avengers now that they’ve already made Iron Patriot, Sentry and Marvel Boy, especially when characters like Daken have badly needed updates for years. In fact, given that Moonstone would almost certainly also be the basis for the classic red suited Carol Danvers (either as an alternate head or a separate retooled release) people have been asking for forever, that’s even more of a no brainer.
I appreciate that you only really collect classic characters and more modern stuff isn’t your bag, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an audience for it.
A Dr Strange cape with that ornate hem wouldn't be easy; especially at that scale. I made a Famous Covers Dr Strange custom way back in the day and his cape took some serious time.
Seems like if the team weren't fans then they'd take heat for that too.

I think this is just a part of having actual fans working on a line like this, which I think way more often than not works out in our favor. I much prefer that they have genuine interest in the franchise because it shows up in the end product in ways that it wouldn't otherwise - but, that means they're occasionally going to have preferences that might not match up with mine. Or other times they do, like in this case with the Dark Avengers, or Dwight's love of the Reavers. I'd feel differently if the line was solely dictated by those tastes, but I think they do a fairly good job of knocking out fan-demanded characters. It's easy to forget when we're still missing Crystal (and the rest of the Inhumans), Attuma, Executioner, etc that just this year we've gotten Wolfsbane, FA Wasp, Count Nefaria, Angel, and others.
Anyway, you're not wrong - that Doom head WAS stupid, and they should really got off their rears and make the Inhumans, Guardians of the Galaxy, and classic Mantis already!
The Doom head was stupid - absolutely. That may go down in history as the biggest waste of plastic in the ML line. It should have been something else, and they could have played a joke on Jesse by playing like it was real and then just giving him the prototype. Has there been a bigger waste of plastic, outside of the clamshell packaging? 😉
This makes me think of Lady Mandarin - a design/version that has shown up on very few wishlists, but Dwight loved and then made a fantastic figure of. That's more than okay. And echoing whoever said most of the time, this works out to our favor having such fans in charge. Especially if you like 90s trading cards.
If there really is another cloth cape coming, could it be for . . . Dracula?
I mean if ever anyone needed a monster-huge cloth cape, it’s him.

That would be great! I love the Dark Avengers. Iron Patriot is the one I wanted most, but I’d like the rest of the team as well.
Moonstone as Dark Ms. Marvel is the most needed. And of course she would be just an alternate head away from a new classic Carol Danvers.
I think Ares and Daken both deserve upgraded figures as well. Ares remade with parts from the new Hyperion and Hercules would be an amazing figure.

If they go that way they have to wire it. His cape has character.
Not sure how they'd give Dracula a soft goods cape unless the collar piece was plastic.

That worked well on the NECA Bela Lugosi. But his cape just falls and drapes over him. It works for that version of Dracula. The draping accentuates his person; his presence. TOD Gene Colan Dracula's cape signified violence, motion and mist. If the cape isn't wired and just hangs there they'd be better off doing a soft plastic cape.

Agreed, collar should be plastic.
@h-bird It's also a bit of a double edged sword. While being fans and having more than a "job" interest in the line is a good thing, it can also lead to unconscious bias against characters that the team doesn't like. Or putting certain looks/teams ahead of others because they like them.
Dan clearly has a love for the 90s animated era and that in general is a good thing, but it can also lead to him probably promoting characters/teams he favours over others choices that may have never had a figure done to date. Now that isn't a problem in general if you like the same thing (and of course he isn't the sole decision maker), but it can be an issue if you want other era looks and they keep going back to the same era with ever more obscure characters.
Same for Dwight and his supposed dislike of Banshee. How long did it take to get a Banshee finally? And then of course it was the 90s version rather than the original yellow/green look that, seemingly, a lot of the fandom wanted first.
Overall I think the ML team is doing a good job, and if they weren't fans we might have a line that is A-List heavy every wave, but being fans can also lead to blind spots.
