Re: Angel/Archangel. Did he ever have blue skin while wearing that costume with the feather wings? I can't remember. The tricky thing about this character is that Marvel does not have two shits to give about him and whatever any given writer wants to do with him this month is fine with them. I've seen him go through so many personality and power changes in the last 20 years, it's ridiculous. Yep, they even made him "Hulk" at one point where he's Angel most of the time, but then turns to Archangel when he gets mad. Wow. Consequently, I sadly have to say that this is one X-Man I've never cared too much about. Because Marvel doesn't either.
Anyway. Maybe the blue head from Archangel will fit on Angel.....
I want those too but I'd be willing to jump ahead to the blue and white costume for Angel he's wearing by the end of that era
Marvel has never known what to do with Angel. He's definitely the least popular member of the original Lee/Kirby five. Claremont didn't care to use him, so Marvel tried pawning him off on the Defenders and Champions. Neither book elevated him beyond second-tier support character.
As originally designed, he's arguably the worst fit for the X-Men's minority metaphor. He's a rich, gorgeous white man with beautiful angel's wings . Wings that he can somehow easily hide, by the way. To me, the character wasn't compelling until he was dismembered. The metal wings and blue skin add another dimension to the most privileged X-Man.
Different writers/artists made a mess of the continuity. He went from metal wings to feather wings and back again. Remender's retcon in Uncanny X-Force was a little goofy, but at least it made sense of a convoluted situation. I love the Dark Angel idea.
They are still using the arms with the groove cut into them. That's absolutely shitty of them, ESPECIALLY in a "Deluxe" figure. Curious if he'll cost Doc Ock price or GG.
After a run of really great headsculpts, gotta say neither of these is doing it for me. The stoic one looks just like Justice but less good and why is the hair the same on both? Feels like this could have easily been a swappable faceplate. Then maybe they'd finally find money to fix the damn forearm grooves.
I hope they'll fix all these issues by the blue re-release - hopefully in a two-pack with the ultimate Jim Lee Psylocke re-do we all want. Until then, my ToyBiz one stays on my shelf.

I was thinking about this after I wrote my Angel-bashing post. My favorites of the original 5 in order would have to be:
Beast (when he's blue)--Furry, monsterus form hiding a kind and intelligent mind, friend to X-Men and Avengers alike. Great.
Cyclops (when he's not written like a douche)---Mostly because he plays well off of Wolverine but the strong leader dedicated to Xavier's cause is a needed element for the team as well. See the animated series for best Cyclops portrayal.
Jean Grey--The most compelling thing about her was her Phoenix story. Like Jason Todd in Batman, this is one character who should have stayed dead for the character developing benefit of those around her. She came back to life and then it was like, "OK, so what?"
Iceman---Cool powers, that's it.
Angel--See above.
On the flip side, I could not make a list like this for the Giant Sized team. If you asked me to rank Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Wolverine from worst to best, I couldn't do it.
I'd love to see flying characters come with windswept alternate heads - especially those that have been made a few times. The next classic Thor we get, for example, and maybe an eventual Angel release. Would add a lot of dynamism for flying poses.
@tsi, I'm not saying they did, but there was definitely a role Angel could have played in the "persecuted minority" story. As someone who lived the life of an elite, he could've given a unique perspective contrasting how he or his family treated the less fortunate with how he is now percieved due to being a mutant. Instead we got "I'll fund a mutant-hunting team," but he wasn't so much a poor fit as he was a misused.

Same here, but likely for opposite reasons. I came into X-Men in the 80s so I didn't have to suffer thru the early days, but with the rose-tinted glasses of hindsight, I've always preferred the starting class to the Deluxe X-Men. There's something appealing about a team of mutants, each with *one* special ability, who use teamwork to maximise those abilities and overcome foes.
The international team, meanwhile, are just so all-encompassing. Wolverine has super-healing, but is also a great tracker, has metal bones and claws. Nightcrawler is super-agile with a tail and can climb walls and teleport and looks like a demon. Storm has the ability to control anything that just falls under the concept of "weather." On the other hand, Colossus has just the one power to become metal, and his role just seemed to be to get his ass beat. Like, all the time.
The New X-Men just aren't what I want mutants to be about. I would love to have lived in a world where the original X-Men got the New X-Men's storylines. That's probably why I loved the New Mutants so much. They each had one power (shut up, Magik) that was often uncontrollable or of limited ability.
A well done, non-hairy Beast body could be re-used sooo many times. Original X-Men Beast, X-Factor Beast, Mimic, and any number of villains and other characters. Mimic could also make use of those Angel wings. So I've convinced myself the single best cost-savings action Hasbro can take is to make a non-hairy Beast figure.

I wholeheartedly support this message.
There is so much mileage they can get out of the OG X-Men alone that I can only assume they're keeping a bunch of stuff in the tank for the inevitable deluge of product when mutants fully take over the MCU. We've got Angel's wings on the way, but proper dedicated sculpts for Iceman and human Beast could be reused so many times for different teams. Hell, I think Scott also needs a unique body to fully realize how I picture him, but the existing buck works pretty well for him. Jean obviously has a pretty normal frame that works on a standard female body (although those really need to be updated in the articulation department), but some new effects pieces could go a long way.
I’m trying to remember this costume with white gloves and boots, but all I seem to remember are yellow gloves and boots from the Byrne Champions and Dark Phoenix era.
The design was tweaked to replace the yellow boots and gloves when he joined the Defenders, after his brief stint with the Claremont era X-Men.
The white glove and boot combo is also pretty much always used when this outfit shows up in other media.
So it might be a case where that just filtered into everyone's memory about what he actually wore as an X-Man. Can't say I mind. I think the white looks better than yellow.
But none of those designs have a groove cut in the middle of the forearm, no matter what color, so clearly #notaccurate.
Can we get Gargoyle, Perez Beast and an updated Valkyrie on the Power Princess buck soon? Please? Pretty please?

Ah, very good. As much as I tried, I never stuck around Defenders for very long. It just didn't appeal to me despite the fact that I like Valkyrie. And seeing those still from those animated series, dur. I absolutely saw those when they were on. Stupid memory failing me.
