@dathing @puckace Other kitbashes I did as a kid for more characters in the 70s: Used Mego Spock with Robin's under britchies for a Namor. Traded for a beat up Shazam and painted his hair blond for a Johnny Storm in red (like he did in the 70s for awhile). Was always annoyed my mom wouldn't buy me a 2nd Reed and Aquaman to do him properly. Made a FF "bathtub" Fantasticar with a shoebox, bespoke cardboard dividers and a touch of black and blue paint.
It was always so hard to be a Marvel Mego kid in the 70s with only Goblin and Lizard as villains. Well I guess Hulk and my kitbash Namor became villains as well for me. The Dr Doom that never happened still stings to this day. As does the lack of Vision and Scarlet Witch; not to mention a single X-Man.
My hope is they keep the aesthetic very similar but with minor updates. Folded boots for Cap, etc. Glove "cuffs" with open hands would be good like the original Goblin. I won't miss the mittens going away. I really liked the Retro Action Mego like DC line Mattel did 12 or so years ago. Sort of a shame those didn't last.
@h-bird Maggot is awesome! These guys have to plan stuff YEARS in advance so I wouldn't be shocked if they have some of those things made in one form or another, but have waited for say....Deadpool 3 or X-Men '97 and I'm all good with that. 2024 will be the first year in some time that I really think the X-stuff will be getting me fired up.
I want that old X-Force and X-Men stuff the most, but still don't get why they never made more Clone Saga and Bagley Spider-man.
@derrabbi Here's one for you that I just remembered, I took an extra Mego Hulk body, painted it blue, took an extra Cornelius head from POTA and used a blue marker on it to create my own Beast figure. Another one I remember doing is using an extra Torch body with a red painted Batman cowl and red tape cut into a DD chest emblem for a kit bashed Daredevil. Megos were the original custom fodder lol.
@thor-el I'm so impressionable - now that I've looked at a few panels and had a day to let it marinate I find myself kinda wanting one of those looks. I just really like completing specific team looks, and am interested in getting as many different iterations of the Avengers specifically.
@ditko Maggott IS awesome! And now that we've opened that door I'm anxiously awaiting Marrow, Cecilia Reyes, and Joseph. Those deep cuts are what I live for in ML. 90's X-Force has some of my most reread issues so I'm definitely looking forward to more there - give me all of the MLF (and the Nasty Boys, Marauders, and Dark Riders while we're at it). You didn't name a single character I wouldn't want to see made, but Kaine is definitely high up there for prominent 90's looks that are starting to feel overdue.
I just need to see an updated Madame Masque on a body with double jointed elbows and a Mandarin.
Yeah I made a few customs with my Megos as well. I remember using an extra Batman head, a Shazam suit, and some yellow boots to make a Flash. I used black electrical tape to create a mask for Black Panther and blue boots from a Batman. I can't remember whose suit I cannibalized. My favorite custom was the Doctor Doom made with the help of my awesome mother. We spray painted a Mego body silver. I made a silver mask out of duct tape over a Shazam head. My mother sewed the tunic, hood, and cape. I was and am a huge Fantastic Four fan.
Which characters do collectors want in the Iron Man retro cared wave? My picks are Crimson Dynamo (Valentin Shatalov), Blizzard (90s animated), and Mandarin (90s animated).
Great question!
Iron Man— Space Armor; Hydro Armor; and maybe some of the fun specialty suits like Samurai Armor, Lava Armor, or Magnetic Armor
Titanium Man 2! (With the size, engineering and articulation of the Destroyer Armor figure)
Crimson Dynamo Mark 5 (Red and silver Dynamo of the 1990s, Valentin Shatalov)
Blizzard 1 (Gregor Shapanka)—different character than Blizzard 2 (Donny Gill) who was previously made in Legends
Blacklash
Mandarin (90s animated)
US Agent (Force Works costume)
Century
Living Laser
Hypnotia— she never got a figure before
Dark Aegis (a personal wish list character for me. He only appeared in the animated series. But he was a fun armored character)
Ghost and Stingray
Great choices! They didn’t have figures in the original line, but they would be excellent choices. Both were very memorable in the 90s animated series (at least for me).
My picks:
Mandarin, either in Acts of Vengeance garb or his 90s look (just without the green face or possibly a more human looking alternate head). The Mandarin is another of those characters where I think the majority of his comic outfits have been kind of crap, so I don't really think of him having any particular "iconic" look tbh.
Ironheart MK III
Count Nefaria
@hbhfback I would love to get that version of Mandarin with no green face. I agree that most of his costumes haven't been that great. But it's criminal that Hasbro hasn't done something with the character all these years. If they are worried about the pc climate dominating social media these days, just put him on fan channel along with a few other essential characters. Like Man-Ape, Mesphisto, etc...
Back to Iron Man
Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man like the Select versions but Marvel Legends scale.
Blacklash
These four are my biggest wants for Iron Man foes. Come on Hasbro knock a few of these out!
I'm sure the Iron Man retro wave will have several IM variants, and of course some form of Mandarin is loooong overdue, but I'm also hoping one or two of these classic villains will show up:
Blacklash (seems pretty likely, since Dan teased him at one point)
Blizzard I (the dark blue and white 70s suit)
Unicorn
Melter
Firebrand
Force (80s 'Armor Wars' suit)
Ghost (80s first appearance look)
Deluxe Ultimo, Firepower, or Arsenal would be cool too.
Basically everyone on this cover and then some!:
