Word to the wise, you can swap the heads on the Retro Ben Reilly and RYV Spider-Man, to the improvement of both I feel.
The reds are about as close of a match as you could realistically ask for
That does look really good.Β
I stuck with the retro carded Spidey over RYV strictly for the Romita head.Β No toe joints, no wall crawl hands, but oh well.Β There's always another Spidey on the way.Β I'll reassess when then next one hits but I'm good until then.

I would have been totally happy to stick with the Retro one myself, but both of the ones I got had some REALLY spotty QA and paint.
Well, that and I'm one of those unfortunate people that compulsively buys almost every vanilla Spider-Man like it's the last one that'll ever be produced. It's a sickness.

I went to try this out (Ben Reilly head on af buck) and I saw a more noticeable difference than what these images are letting off.. at least on mine, anyway.

Yeah, it's not a 100% perfect match in-hand, sorry if the pics are misleading! That's why I said it's about as close as you could realistically ask for.
Since there's already a noticeable color difference between the standard RYV Spidey head and body, the swapped head honestly doesn't stand out anymore than the regular one does. At least in my opinion, of course.

I know redos are sometimes a sore subject around here, but you don't get Namorita and Justice without Black Panther v214 and Vision v109. The new body molds are such an improvement on the Bucky Cap body that you could make a case for updating nearly all of Spider-Man's rogues.
I hope to cause such a fuss about a new Green Goblin with a dedicated sculpt that I get Hasbro's attention. I'd add Electro, Rhino, and Chameleon to your list.
Β
You're just trying to provoke me, aren't you?Β 😆Β
Β
I fully understand the need for a classic Spider-Man to continue to be released -Β the secondary market prices for any basic Spider-Man figure clearly demonstrate that.Β Β Β But another Rhino?Β Β Really?Β Β Electro?Β Β Β
Β
I honestly struggle a little bit with understanding people who approach their collection like painting the Golden Gate bridge -Β never complete because as soon as you get to the end you start over at the beginning again.Β Β I guess it's easy if there's only 25 characters you really want, to keep wanting them remade over and over again anytime there's even the most minor upgrades in tooling available,Β but I just can't connect with that.Β Β
Β
I approach my collection more like Louis and Clark -Β reach new territory and then keep moving to explore the next thing and then the next.Β Β I want as broad and expansive a collection of characters as I can get and if that means I don't get Rhino version 12 or Green Goblin 20,Β I can live with that.Β Β The Rhino and Green Goblin(s) I have are excellent and work very well in my display.Β
Β
But I guess since we both exist Hasbro will keep vaguely appeasing us both with crumbs without fully delivering what either of us wish for.
Β
Β
Hasbro is always going to want to put popular characters out on the market again.Β And Spider-Man's main villains are popular.Β I can understand being content with versions out there.Β I personally don't need another Rhino, as the BAF is rather good (despite those knees) and the MS one is quite good as well.Β Β I'd rather see some characters never done before (Cardiac, Stegron, etc), but redoes are inevitable.Β

You hit the nail on the head. There are only about 50 Marvel characters in my collection, so rinse and repeat makes sense to me. Electro is selling for a pretty penny on eBay. Rhino, Chameleon, Vulture, and Kraven just aren't very good figures.
I think your approach is entirely valid, except for the part where you say the Green Goblin in your collection is "excellent." 😉Β I understand not wanting a redo of whatever C-list villain, but characters like Goblin and Loki are integral to the Marvel U and have never had rock-solid figures.
Β
I agree. No reason to redo Puma but characters like Goblin should be nailed and given other variations. The classic Goblin costume isnβt even accurate. Iβm totally cool with the classic Rhino. Why Namorita being off is weird. We prob all consider her to be a one and done like PsychoMan or Puma.Β
Of all the major Spidey villains, I'd say the only ones sorely in need of better figures are Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kraven, and Vulture. It's wild how Kraven has had more shots than most characters get, but Hasbro keeps sticking him on that awful Grim Reaper body with the shoulders that feel like they're going to shear with even the slightest movement.
Retro Rhino does everything I need a Rhino to do and looks (mostly) good doing it, even if those knees are admittedly ugly. Chameleon isn't a fun toy, but the character isn't particularly toyetic in the first place so I'm not sure what they could do to make him that much better. Yeah, give him better articulation so I can... put him in the same basic gun holding or tie adjusting pose?
Though, they should still release another since I know aftermarket prices are prohibitively high for new collectors on that last one.

Β
This is actually one of the reasons I'm down on the contstant calls for re-dos.Β Β Kraven has had redo's...Β over and over again -Β and yet people aren't happy with any of them.
Β
Why do they think Hasbro delivering them yet another Chameleon or Rhino or even Green Goblin means that they'll finally get it right this time?Β Β Hasbro has proven that they may not -Β so all that's happening is we get a figure that people clamoring for a redo still aren't happy with and we don't get a shot at a new character that's missing from our collection.Β Β These re-do's are often a lose-lose proposition for us.
Β

Β
This is the one point I can't argue against at all.Β Β For characters that haven't been done in a handful of years and are outrageously priced on the secondary market,Β it is totally valid to release an updated version just so collectors aren't locked out.Β Β Β I may grit my teeth that another release of Hobgoblin may mean I have that much longer to wait for Cardiac or Will O' the Wisp -Β but if it means many collectors can add him to their shelf without having to pay outrageous aftermarket prices then it's worth the trade off.
Β
And perhaps Chameleon is one I can't use as an example here - because I forgot the Chameleon we got was just the character's head on a suited body.Β Β That one really does need to be made on the retro card with his animated jumpsuit along the lines of the Toy Biz version.
Β

See, this is the toughest part of trying to appease collectors, as there really isn't pleasing everybody. For me, personally, Hasbro has already pretty thoroughly tackled what I want to see from Spidey's little corner of the Marvel Universe and gotten most of what I want out in some form or another. So, my list mainly consists of redos at this point. That's just my prerogative and I respect that not everyone feels the same in that regard.
You're also definitely right in that there's no guarantee Hasbro will do it right this time and there is, in fact, a very high chance that they'll just make the same mistakes again or improve some things while also downgrading a few others, as they like to do.
Even more than that, what people want to see out of a worthwhile update varies wildly from person to person. Some people probably want a Green Goblin with all that fancy new articulation seen on bodies like the Retro Spidey body, with the scales on the limbs sculpted in a very specific manner, it's also gotta be pinless, and all the other bells and whistles.
Gobby is my favorite Marvel villain (despite my username) so I'd love that, but for me I just want one on a body with a better ab crunch and butterfly joints. With some interchangeable hands and maybe a head with better painted eyes too. Everything else could literally be the same as the Retro one we've already got and I'd still be pleased. I doubt many would say the same.
Kraven is another good example of this. I'd honestly be fine with ANY of the Kravens we got if their shoulders didn't feel so frail and rubbery. I know many would disagree and want him on a new body outright, with a different head since I know plenty of people HATE that really angry head the last two have gotten.
So, yeah I get why this must get super annoying for collectors like you, who just want to build a universe. I just have a different collecting style and there really isn't a way to reconcile that. Like I said at the beginning, there is no pleasing everybody.
Still, redos of popular characters are inevitable, not only for new collectors but to keep retailers interested in this line and to tie into new media. We're getting a Kraven movie so, I'm sure we're gonna see another comic one to tie into that. Will it finally be good enough to stop the demands for a redo? Ehhh, we'll see.
Β
The new Rhino on retro card was pretty perfect IMO even if it has some older style joints. The head sculpts were spot on. The new Lizard, Mysterio and Tombstone are all pretty definitive too so Hasbro is capable of making good figures.Β
I donβt need redos of most of the rogues, but a deluxe Goblin with a larger glider like the recent MCU release would be great.
Do we need an inhumans thread yet? Β Hoping we finally get Triton now thst Hasbro had a scaled torso ftom Jack-o-lantern. Β They can reuse it for the Man-Wolf in armor lok
If they made a whole new pinless scaled body it could be used with other pieces for a new takes on lots of characters. A new goblin with pinless arms and legs, a new head sculpt with better painted eyes and comic accurate boots would go a long way. Trick out a new glider and lots of accessories I'm pretty sure he could be fairly sold at the deluxe Black Widow price point.Β Triton could use the entire pinless scale body with trunks and oddly enough classic Iron Man boots and gloves. My guess is they would boot on the tubing down the arm.
