IThey probably tested sitting fully articulated and standing fully articulated and thought it looked unnatural. Which if you can't visualize why it would look unnatural, think about, that at least for the version they went with he is a husky dog, and his legs would look very different, sometimes off, with full articulation.
So, I think I agree that the fully articulated back legs would simply NOT do the sitting pose they wanted to do on this dog. I have the fully articulated animals Hasbro has released - and while I definitely love them all, a natural "good dog" sitting pose is not something they pull off well.
I think the compromise probably should have been - include the swappable back legs so you can get the sitting poses right - that's fine. But then properly articulate the standing legs. Yeah, it would have upped the production costs a bit - but it would have been the right thing to do. Let's face it, we're probably getting one shot at Lockjaw so it would have been nice if it was fantastic and not just good.
Honestly I would have been happy if they had included a second portrait for 'Jaw of the older face design so I could have it both ways. I would have preferred that to the 'serious' face and 'smiling' face they went with.
Give 'Old School face'
and "new school face"
And then we could display it whichever way we preferred. I would pay more if those options were available, for sure.

Dogs don't always sit the same way. They can sit with the folded-up legs this new Lockjaw has his in that none of the articulated animals I've ever had can achieve, but dogs can sit another way that all of them CAN achieve.
This is probably how you're envisioning dogs sitting. I usually see this described as "alert" sitting. With their legs folded up like this they can quickly get into a run stance, so if they're on the alert for whatever reason they sit like this.
But if they're chilling out they often sit with their legs straight out under them. That's the pose all the dogs and cats I have from GI Joe Classified, Legends, and other lines can easily achieve. I've had my Mezco Lockjaw sitting like that plenty of times. This pose can likely be achieved even with the straight back legs they're giving us, but maybe not, we'll see. Many dogs NEVER sit this way, but I've known a few in my life who sit like the one below by default.
I've never thought to complain about my articulated dogs not being able to achieve an alert sit. I'm fine with a chilling-out sit because I realize an alert sit would require a level of articulation that's beyond the current state of action figure art.
Here's a shot I took a few years ago of Mezco Lockjaw in a chill sit.
Oh... I'm honestly not defending Hasbro's choice on the sitting legs - just trying to puzzle out their thought process. I'm definitely on the side of wishing they had included articulation in the legs.
I have been kicking myself for years now for not just paying the money for that Mezco Lockjaw and the stupid Black Bolt chew toy he came with. I detest the Mezco cloth covered figures and didn't want to spend the extra for a figure I knew I'd hate - but I have regretted that choice for a long time because the dog turned out so good.
Maybe now with a Legends version coming out a few more will show up on the secondary market (pickings have been exceedingly slim in that department).

I don't like most Mezco cloth outfits, but I do like the ones that are a mix of cloth and pleather, and that's what Black Bolt is. LOVE that guy in every way because for whatever reason you don't see the stitching because I guess they hide it under the pleather bits of the outfits. Same with a few other Mezcos like Magneto who is also a mix of cloth and pleather. The main down side is pleather degrades. None of my Mezcos have after a few years, but we'll see what they look like in 20 or so years.
I looked last week for recent prices on Mezco Black Bolt and Lockjaw on eBay and they weren't significantly more than the original retail price was of $120. All of the ones from the past few months went for around $130 to $170.
I think PC's suggestion would have been great - articulate the legs normally, and include the alternate sitting legs too. I'm not *too* fussed about it, but after such a long wait for Lockjaw you want to see him fully kitted out.
Agree about the alternate portrait as well. Honestly, I wonder if this really is our only chance at getting him? I could see an Inhumans set down the line that reused him and got us the other members of the Royal Family + updated Black Bolt and/or Medusa.
That's not too bad. I gave up looking honestly. I used to look constantly and there were always just two listings. One was for a Lockjaw with a broken tuning fork on his head for $180 and the other was the set for $300. And that was it. Never any other listings that I could find.
Good to know there are a few more popping up. I'll have muster up the energy to wade in and give it a shot.

When discussing any character who's never been released in 20+ years of the Legends line I always assume that yes, once they finally do release that's our only chance at getting that character.
Although I guess they did release a 1:18 scale version at some point. I'm not expecting another within the next decade, but who knows, like you said maybe they'll do a box set just to get some more use out of the sculpt.

I take your point, but plenty of characters that have never been made are popping up that I 100% expect to see again in the near future. Crystal, Sersi, and Son of Satan immediately spring to mind - I'd be very surprised if we don't see the obvious next versions of them somewhat soon, even though they only recently made their ML debuts. It's probably a more difficult parallel to draw for a non-standard size figure like Lockjaw, but if there's any deluxe they could double-dip on it might be him.
Absolutely agree that it would be better with articulated legs as an option.
Highly in favor of the more classic sculpt for his head as well. That makes too much sense. I smell a double dip down the line. This is the Hasbro way.
Wasn't/Isn't there supposed to be a reveal, or something today?
@justice Thank you, I realized that, a little while later. 🙂 Kinda bummed, I was hoping it was a new character.
According to Dan, film the Deadpool, Wolverine and Civilian Wolverine figures constitutes a wave.
No additional "spoilery" characters, not even Cassandra Nova who has been in several of the trailers.
No BAF.
No additional comic characters to flesh out a full wave, which they could have easily done by adding a comic Deadpool, any Deadpool variation, any of the Mercs For Money (Solo, Stingray, Terror Inc, Slapstick), Madcap, etc.
Is this the future of film waves? Just a few main characters, but not necessarily 6-7 of them?
No more film/comic split?
I can see the Thunderbolts wave being a fully fledged out wave.

I wouldn't go that far necessarily. This was a weird year for them. We've seen in Transformers that they're putting together SKUs of re-orderable Optimus Prime and Bumblebee's separate from waves. They may be treating this in a similar way - keep DP and Wolvie on shelves for longer.
