They are not seriously releasing an updated Phoenix and not using the sculpted thigh-high boots they JUST created.
Tell me they are not.
I posit we at the Fwoosh call those the Cockrum thighs. They did say it used the Warbird body.
That new movie Venom's little Venom head backpack has to be used later for a Marvel vs Capcom Venom, right? That's an iconic design quirk of the Capcom Venom.
Those of you who have been clamoring for Dracula, is that a version you're happy with?
Not even close. In fact, I really hate this design for Dracula, and I'm massively disappointed by this reveal. The Colan version is the one I want...and I will continue to wait. Sad thing is the Strange Tales wave SHOULD be something I'd immediately buy, but none of these are the iterations I've been wanting, with the exception of Lilith. I'll likely grab her & Hellstrom, since this may be the only time he is made, but I would have much preferred his classic look.
Odin is awesome! Instant purchase. Probably pickup the Destiny/Rogue pack as well.
The ST wave is a huge disappointment. Hard pass....
It's not. The size is great. When your body mass increases, your head doesn't magically get bigger.Odin's head looks too small for his massive body.
The problem is, many ML figures have huge head sculpts (recent Animated Morbius) and it's just wrong. Most collectors are used to huge ML head sculpts and think it's "the norm".
If you have a large frame, you have a matching head. People are generally proportionate. Odin is a large guy. He wasn't a shrimpy guy who took super steroids and suddenly finds himself is a body which doesn't match its frame. This figure looks like a guy wearing a padded Odin suit. Which is fine if trying to be a stylized representation. If anything, Hasbro has traditionally made their ML heads small. They did this when they first started their ML run, like their Human Torch/Vision body. Lots of small heads which I suppose were an attempt to make the body look "heroic." They've since adjusted. For someone like Quicksilver, it could be argued he has a slim build which could make his head look larger, just like someone who loses a lot of weight ends up looking like their head is large for their body. I've seen plenty of people in reality who have "large" heads but have frankly never seen someone who has a small one.
As awesome as that new Odin figure is, I'm actually pretty happy with this guy. He gets the job done nicely as a representation of the character for my collection, and since he's a BAF he technically didn’t cost me anything.
Love the firebird Phoenix accesory. Heads are super ugly - what happened there? Easy fix using a previous one. Definitely getting for the Phoenix force.
I really dislike the choices in Strange Tales. Hard pass on that Storm/Wolverine. Such wasted slots for me. I like Lilith and Damion
That "Hellverine" figure doesn't even have pin-less joints. It's just the old brown suit figure we already have with a new head and hands. Talk about lazy reuse. In fact, that whole wave is pretty much a pass for me. Guess I'll be sticking with my old ToyBiz Blackheart figure for now.
Finally caught up with the reveals. It was exciting to see more mutants, specially since we did not expect any of them in the Strange Tales wave.
And so many females! that was a plus too. I think the figures look solid in general.
Highlights for me are Blackheart, Destiny, Phoenix, Dracula and Bloodstorm. I will even also get that Professor. Never cared for it, but now after X-Men 97 he will look great next to Lilandra.
Positives aside, some reveals felt like homophobic slaps to me:
Jean instead of Rachel? slap!
Rogue instead of an improved Mystique next to her wife? slap!
Lilith instead of the sexy Goblin Queen? slap!
Jean being the first female to use that body mold instead of Psylocke? huge slap!
So now I'm super excited for SDCC since I hope we'll get some more "non rumored" X-Men figures revealed. I'm really hoping for a proper X-Men BAF wave. Or orange card one.
Some characters I can't wait to see are:
- Outback versions of Storm, Psylocke and Colossus. (A 3-pack would be heaven)
- Green Banshee
- Phoenix (Exaclibur)
- Feral
- Hepzibah
- Revanche
and of course more Betsy: an updated super posable Jim Lee one and my most wanted, the Disassembled costume.
Odin going up for preorder on a Thursday and not a Wednesday is a missed opportunity.
Blackheart looks great, if they're releasing Hellstrom, maybe there's hope for Mephisto.
Odin is just super impressive. He’a going to cost loads, but I’ll drop the cash happily. All that sculpted detail, a choice of hats, ravens. They nailed him hard.
Phoenix looks fine, but I’m a bit baffled as to why they bothered - feels like everyone has a pretty decent version already.
Count me as one who’s happier buying this Destiny set - had no need for another Mystique, so this Rogue is at least a bit more interesting (for all that I’ll still probably sell her).
New Venoms just slide straight off my brain now. They announce one, I think ‘Oh, Venom’ and a few hours later I’ve forgotten it even exists.
Strange Tales still bums me out. I hate that I’ve started justifying reasons to buy the figures to get Blackheart. Hellstrom and Lillith sure. Maybe I can sell my Voodoo off for more than pennies. I’m still never buying Vampire Storm, BAF torso or not. Nobody will want to buy that figure loose. Thank god at least Wolverine is BAFless.
Secret Wars is pretty much my last hope for ‘24 now. Hopefully that will mean a few good figures.
