Read the biography. Marston lived in a 3 way marriage with 2 women and was (for the time) openly involved in BDSM. It isn't that she is tied up now and again; its that she's tied up or tying someone up all the time in her early appearances. DC comics was concerned at the time; so were censors. This is the 40s; it was considered risque. Marston's views were complicated; he was a radical feminist (once again for the time) and had many deep connections to the suffrage movement. He also talked about the freeing nature of being bound and controlling others "lovingly". He was weird; an intellectual; a con man; a college professor and one of the early inventors of the lie detector. The chains were symbolic of breaking the chains of oppression on women but they were also fetishistic in nature too. Not overtly; it was the 40s; but a deep constant undercurrent.
Great team shot, Norm! I can’t wait to get this new Vision. He’s a favorite character of mine, and this figure looks like a significant upgrade. Pretty cool to get upgrades for Wonder Man and Vision in the same year.https://flic.kr/p/2ppb7a2
I’ve been waiting for this one all year to really make my Bronze Age Avengers (that are mostly pinless) feel complete. He definitely fills out this team in a beautiful way. I thought the floating cape would be more annoying but it’s fine. I’m ignoring the poorly painted glove and boot tips. This is otherwise the build I’ve always thought Vision should have. His splash of green stands out among this team, and complements retro Wanda perfectly. I love this figure.Didn’t take pics of Black Panther, the only other one I’ve received from Amazon (Justice is the only other one I ordered from Amazon and should be here tomorrow). BP is very regal, but will definitely be caught off guard because his cape completely blocks his peripheral vision. The bracers really should have been keyed into his glove tops, because they will never stay put. I’ve stretched them around the meatiest part of his forearms but I’m afraid they’ll get stressed. Otherwise, another winner.
Namorita's open hands have straight pegs. I slid her wrist bands back to see which direction they bend and was surprised to see no joint. I guess it doesn't really matter, but I had to switch to the fists if for no other reason than to keep me from trying to bend a non existing joint. Sometimes I'll pick up a figure and mindlessly fiddle and pose while thinking about something else and I know I'll subconsciously want to bend those wrists. Yesterday I opened the mafex T2 Arnold and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around his lack of bicep swivel.

I guess it being in the 40s and 50s makes more sense. I'm honestly used to BDSM being overt, whips and chains with black leather and nipple clamps. But I guess I can see how her being tied up alot, at least for back then, seemed a bit borderline. I wonder if they get into any of that stuff on the Marsten and Wonder Women movie. I really should go see if it's still up somewhere.
I wonder if the person who created Lois Lane liked to jump off buildings in his/her sparetime...
The three I ordered from Amazon (Vision, Justice, Namorita) are arriving today. I wasn’t expecting them until next week at the earliest as I didn’t realize that others were already receiving theirs. Do they not have labor laws in the North Pole? I can’t remember the last time I had so many preorders hit in December.

So gratifying to someone like me that started reading the Avengers back in 1974. I hope we get a Hank Pym Yellowjacket in 2024 and a Perez/Byrne Beast. I’m at the point where I don’t even care if Hasbro recycles the Jim Lee Beast mold again. Ideally, a Perez/Byrne Beast would be smaller, but just give us the Perez/Byrne head, and we’ll make do.

I have to admit, I never read those comics. I started reading in the ‘90s but got really committed to comics from about 2000-2011. But I have a deep appreciation for the history of comics that came before. The team rosters, the creatives behind them, it’s all stuff I’ve read about, but never actually read issues or trades from before 1990, with some exceptions like Phoenix Saga and DoFP.
Got most of the wave from BBTS, but some of them were sold out. Love this wave! Outstanding wave for me both in terms of character selection and execution. Can’t wait to complete the Void!
I’m a bit annoyed with the lack of (blue) paint coverage around the arm sockets on Namorita’s molded red torso. It makes her look like she has little red lines around her arms, at least on her left. I just ordered another one to see if I can get one with better paint coverage, but if not, I may just take a little acetone and remove the blue paint around the arms on her torso. I don’t think that 1/8 th of an inch on the cut of her swimsuit around the shoulders would make much of a difference.
”Wouldn’t it be easier to just paint around the edges of the torso with a matching blue?” Yes, it would…for just about anyone but me. I don’t have a very good track record with paint and action figures. It rarely ends well. 😛

If you ever feel like checking out Bronze Age Avengers I would suggest the Kree/Skrull War, the Korvac Saga, the Celestial Madonna storyline, or the Avengers/Defenders War. The Avengers had some really spectacular stories in the 70s.
Pretty much all the Perez / Byrne drawn era of the 70s Avengers is worth a read.
The Void has so much effort and cool sculpting put into it. I just wish I cared one bit about it. 🙁
I'm having trouble keeping the lower claws plugged into the back. They keep wanting to pop off. This guy is massive and as everyone has already observed, delicious looking. 🙂 Just like candy. Crabby, tentacle-y, gross-looking candy.
I had a feeling I was going to like Namor and in hand, I really do. That headsculpt is really fantastic and the hair is sculpted in such a way that it works in many poses AND his neck articulation is fantastic. He's a cool figure. I don't know if I need this figure long-term or if I'll just headswap him, but I like it a lot.
I have the same issue with Namorita's armpits. Plus, mine has a slightly blurry face print so I'm going to exchange as well. She's a striking figure, but just... why?
All of these figures move very smoothly, which I love, and Crystar is fun to pose just as a body. He and Power Princess, as the completely new bucks of the wave, are really great. I like her hidden boot swivels, those were a nice surprise. Her gold coverage could definitely be better on her chest, but the black visible kinda adds depth. I like her feet.
Vision deserved sculpted pieces. I like the size of this one and the colors, but Hasbro - stop cutting corners with sculpted fake costume lines, non sculpted boots and his chest star not being there. Also those Vulcan open hands need to be resized down - they are huge.
I love the upper half of Justice - the way they did the cape really makes me happy and looks so smooth and clean. His lower legs, though - ugh. He also feels small. For a character I've wanted for 23 years, I'm thrilled but also see where corners were cut.
I went ahead and gave the acetone a shot. Here’s how she turned out. It may not work for everyone, but it works fine for me. I cancelled the second one I ordered. God knows how many I would have to go through to find one that I deemed acceptable. Plus the paint around the legs at the bottom of the torso seem fine on this one.
What specific eras were Justice and Namorita from?
