I searched through the code for this site and it looks like Robo chose the wpForo WordPress plugin:

https://wpforo.com/

I've also seen the script that's looking for image names in posts that the site is probably using.  Gonna look around and see if there's an alternative, but my initial search suggests there may be no current popular solution for embedding external images that don't end with a file extension.

In addition to 'this feels different and I hate it a little' - we gotta shout out to Robo for bringing back something. He didn't have to. Could have just said 'forums are old news anyway - come talk toys on my Twitch channel right after this word from Raid: Shadow Legends.'  I don't think there's a huge benefit to Robo in bringing forums back and I, personally, appreciate it. I'm sure many of us do.

Most comments I see about enabling HTML says it opens the door for more harsh spam when they make it through.

BUT......I did just install an embed function. Works with Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Flickr. Just paste the link and go.

For all the things about this new setup that are less than ideal, this is a great addition. Thanks for adding this, Robo.

Many times on the old forums, folks would post links to important news/reveals/deals from social media platforms that I don't use, and I wouldn't be able to see it - meaning a lot of FOMO until I either tracked it down myself, or some other poster came along and eventually provided it.

The easy embedding of these posts should alleviate that.

With time, I'm sure Robo will be able to resolve more of these issues and continue to improve the experience here. Give the guy a break. Robo, thanks for all you do. You're one of the absolute best things about this community. Here's hoping your eye is feeling better, too.

I think I know which images don't work by pasting them into the editor--any that don't end in a file extension such as .jpg, gif, .png, etc aren't going to work.

That still doesn't explain it in full because I've had the same issue when trying to share images that have a URL ending in .jpg and .png. For example:

In fact, this image not only fails to embed, but even linking to it won't work. Clicking the link results in a small message popping up on the forum that says "The requested content cannot be loaded. No image found." You can get around that by right clicking the link and telling it to open in a new tab, though.

The only thing I can think to do is place it as code, which slipped my mind when I was actually trying to share this image in a thread:

 https://i.marvelousnews.com/g/generated/ToyNew/SDCC.2023/Diamond.Select/Crimson.Dynamo/Crimson.Dynamo.6__scaled_800.jpg

Edit: SUDDENLY THE EMBED WORKS—NOW I JUST LOOK CRAZY. The link is still broken, though.

Welcome back Damien! Glad to see more familiar faces make it back in, suck that it's taking so much effort and time.

Embeds being implemented is great! Thanks a ton Robo.

Thanks! Good to see you too. Although at first I was like 'who the fuck is Niko?' but that's because apparently I stopped reading before the parenthesis.

Also.. why is it that this thread is basically filled with bitching and complaining about forum functionality from one or two people that, as far as I can remember, didn't even fucking post on the original board? Rings kind of hollow to be like 'I care so much about this community, I who never engaged with this community in a meaningful way before coming here to bitch about the new forums.'  Unless I'm mistaken and they were just so bland and uninteresting of a poster that I never registered their existence for the 15ish years I was here. But I mean.. even then.. the point kind of stands.

it seems that way because it’s easy to gloss over the calm, reasonable posts and go for the pretentious geek. I disagree with his methods, but the point stands: an alternative was suggested that seeming addresses all the heretofore mentioned issues from users and admin, but no reason was given to even look into it beyond “I don’t want to.” I don’t really give a fuck who sleepyhead is or their inability to play well with others. They’re the epitome of the “You’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole” meme as far as I’m concerned.

but maybe I don’t post enough to warrant an opinion? 🤷‍♀️

@thwiptster no, it's not that. Like I've said a couple of times, we don't want an offsite extension of the Fwoosh. Everything is self contained here, all in one spot. All in the same framework. There are issues, I know. Continuing to work on things and tweak setting as we go. It's only been four days.

It is what it is; I can certainly understand wanting to keep things here. The improvements the last few days have been great, and I'm sure that will continue. I appreciate the work put in. 👍

If anyone happens to know my exact join date from before the crash, maybe you have screenshots of old threads or something like that, that would be cool to have for my title thingy.

I've hosted my professional portfolio through Wordpress for about 15 years now. While it wouldn't be my first choice anymore, Wordpress is extremely customizable with user-created widgets and modules. I'm confident Robo can fix a lot of the lingering issues with time.

Christ, our bromance is going to be twice as embarrassing now that the forum has a "like" feature.

Nearly all of my old favorites have made the pilgrimage to the new site. Glad to have you guys back.

@Robo I appreciate the hard work put in to rebuilding the forum in your spare time. Thank you.

I also appreciate others here who offer constructive and friendly feedback, rather than toxicity. Hugs to you all 🙂

I think of dealing with these niggling issues on unfamiliar forum software as a way to exercise the brain and build personal resilience. Sorely needed in some people, as we have seen. Heh.

I was only on the old forum for about 18 months, so I am happy to see it back and familiar faces from the Star Wars threads popping up again. Cheers guys 👍

I don't know how you got that Marvelous News pic embedded at all given that their web servers have code specifically designed to prevent other sites from embedding their images.  The old Fwoosh site couldn't embed pics from their site, and neither can the other forums I use.

I don't know how you got it to work, but I do know that when it wasn't working it probably wasn't this site but theirs that was preventing it.

One special request: please God change the Times New Roman font in the Forum Jump menu at the bottom of the pages.  That shit is *fugly*.

On my Chrome browser on Windows that font definitely isn't Times New Roman.  It's a sans serif font that looks similar to Arial or Helvetica.

@robokillah >Insert It’s not a democracy, it’s a cheerocracy gif here<

I admit I know nothing about website or forum maintenance. All I’m going off of is what I’ve read in this thread. If keeping everything on one site and hammering out issues is easier for you, that’s what we get. It still reads to me like dismissing alternatives out of hand and that puzzles me, only because I’m the type who would rather research all options before settling on the optimal choice. Maybe you have compared services like proboards or whatever and deemed it a bigger hassle, but that’s not what I’ve read and that was the point of my comment. Good luck with everything.

The "body" section under "Leave a reply" is awfully small only allowing for three lines of text. It would be nice to have that enlarged.
