What teams are essential for the new Mattel line to be considered a success?

I’ve been daydreaming about how I would map out the new Mattel DC line if I was the manager.  Completing teams would be one of my top goals going in, but I wouldn’t want to start what I can’t finish.   Rather than have ten teams in progress, I would focus on three or four at a time.  Once one team is (reasonably) complete, I would move onto the next.  (By “reasonably”, I mean that I wouldn’t consider the Satellite JLA to be incomplete if Snapper Carr and the Phantom Stranger were missing.)

The question is what teams are essential?

My own personal view is skewed, because most of what I’ve read is from the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages.  So naturally, my list would start with:

Satellite Era JLA
Golden/Silver/Bronze Age JSA
New Teen Titans
Levitz/Giffin Era LoSH (Might not be feasible with so many members)
New Gods

Although I’ve only been reading sporadically since then, there are a few other obvious choices:

Griffin JLA/JLI
Morrison/Dell JLA
Johns Era JSA

Then there are contemporary teams that have a strong following like Justice League Dark.

I know, I know.  “You forgot the Seven Soldiers of Victory, Doom Patrol, the Metal Men, Challengers of the Unknown, Freedom Fighters, the Outsiders, the Omega Men, Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew….!”  Hey, I would love to complete several of those teams, but let’s get the low hanging fruit with the broadest range of appeal first. 😉

So being as objective as possible, what teams do you consider “must haves” for a DC line to have had a reasonably (there’s that word again) good run?

Honestly my top wants would probably have to wait a beat but they would be

Legion of Super Heroes - where my hope would be to mix in some of the big name cast with some of the characters DCUC never got around to -  Dawnstar, Mon El, Dream Girl, Tyroc, Shadow Lass, Blok and Ferro Lad.

Those are my favorites and the one's I'd want to see most, but I know there would still be tons of others Duo Damsel/Triplicate Girl, Star Boy, Phantom Girl, Polar Boy, Shrinking Violet, White Witch and on and on and on.

The other team I would love to see done comprehensively, well and in scale with each other (finally) is the Teen Titans -  I'd love a young team with Robin, Wonder Girl, Aqualad, Speedy and Kid Flash... and then the New Teen Titans with  Nightwing, Firestar, Raven, Cyborg, Jericho, Beast Boy, Terra and then the more modern iterations... I want a robust Teen Titans display that actually scale with each other appropriately and contain all the members.   I hate that I have a classic Robin that towers over tiny little Kid Flash and no speedy or Aqualad at all.   A modern wonder girl that's taller than Nightwing... it's all just a bit of a jumbled mess and it's one of my favorite teams that I'd love some consistency with.

My DCUC display did an OK job with the JSA but there are some pretty big gaps where we got the modern version of one character (Mr. Terrific) and the classic version of another (Hourman) so neither version of the team could quite be complete...

My JLA shelf is still pretty strong, but obviously there's plenty of room and they will clearly need to revisit and an upgrade is an upgrade.

Some Villain Teams I'd love to see though -

Fatal Five - we only got Validus... I need the rest

Fearsome Five -  umm... they teased Mammoth,  but we never got Dr. Light, Shimmer, Jinx, Psimon or Gizmo.. I need them all

Brotherhood of Evil -  DCUC gave us Monsieur Mallah and the Brain and then none of the others... no Madame Rouge, Gemini, Warp, Plasmus, Phobia, Houngan, etc

Secret Six -   We have a decent Catman and Deadshot,  Bane and King Shark... but there's a ton of members I'd like -  Ragdoll at the top of the list.  Cheshire, Scandal Savage, Knockout, Black Alice, Jeanette, Dwarfstar... all would be welcome.

So that's what I'd love to see.    Additional new gods,  a few of the Lantern corps we haven't seen before might be fun...

I'm interested, assuming the line is in a scale I care about and hoping they'll at least sprinkle in some characters I don't already own multiple times over.

I think about this too, as I'm sure most others do. It doesn't seem unreasonable to create and finish some teams. I think the Justice League would always be the main team. Their members are mostly the main characters in the DCU, so one or two of them would be in every wave. It would be better to focus on a certain era at a time. I would prefer starting with a bronze age satellite JLA, but it might make more sense to start with the contemporary characters first and then add the classic teams.

Other teams that can be built over time are the JSA & Titans. There would have to be a LSH character in every wave to build the LSH, LSV or Fatal Five. Some smaller teams could be built in a few waves like the silver or bronze age Doom Patrol, silver age Teen Titans or the Outsiders. The same can be done for the Legion of Doom, Fearsome Five or Injustice League.

There are some teams I would do as box sets instead of single releases such as Challengers of the Unknown, Sea Devils, Time Masters, Cave Carson and Crew, Newsboy Legion, Blackhawks or even the Teen Titans when they switch to civilian clothes under Loren Jupiter.

For me personally, JLA, JSA, Teen Titans, Legion of Doom and the CSA. Icing on the cake would be All-Star Squadron, LOSH, JLI, Fatal Five, Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, Secret Six, Injustice Society and Doom Patrol.

When I looked at the Legion of Doom,  I realize that this is one team that DCUC actually finished.   I think they actually delivered every member of that team on my shelf -  even Giganta and Toyman.

Luthor, Sinestro, Brainiac, Black Manta, Bizarro, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Giganta, Gorilla Grodd, Solomon Grundy, Toyman...   I guess if we want to be picky we didn't really get Scarecrow.

The earlier Batman DC Super Heroes line did Scarecrow and then DCUC did Yellow Lantern Scarecrow -  but, I used the DCSH Scarecrow in my Legion of Doom display and he worked fine.

It was the one thing DCUC was hyper-focused on was the Super Friends and Super Powers line-ups.

I just want the JLI, the modern Titans, a classic Authority, Planetary and Gen 13, and a Firestorm and Firehawk.

Give me those and I would be finally, happily done.

I hope the do teenage Legion instead of young adult Legion. Just for some variation. I still display my DCD Legion with my DCUC instead of the DCUC Legion box.

It's a ways off so I still have time to decide, but I'm on the fence if I want an 80s DC lineup to match my Marvel shelf, or a 90s display from when I was most into reading DC.

I'm very fond of the Satellite Era JLoA, Outsiders and Teen Titans, but I was all-in on the JLA years and Reign of the Supermen/Y2K, Young Justice days.

Then again, the Infinite Crisis days were a real classic DC Renaissance. I had a whole blog about my comic pitches for continuing the post-Crisis DCU after they abandoned it for New52. Maybe a new line of figures will let me assemble the teams as I pitched them.

I'm probably different than most because I honestly have most of the teams that I want from DCUC with DCD/DCC and McFarlane mixed in. My biggest wants are more civilian types of characters and Legion of Super Heroes.

For civilians I've always wanted Ma and Pa Kent, Amanda Waller, Iris Allen-West, Martha Wayne, Lara Lor-Van, Etta Candy, Morgan Edge, Vicki Vale, Maggie Sawyer, etc. I know that I may honestly be the only one in the world who wants some of those, especially Grandpa and Grandma type figures.

I have the old DCUC LOSH 12-pack along with some additional figures that were made outside of that, mostly by DC Direct, but I'd love to expand that team with characters that haven't been made before in anywhere near this scale especially some of the female members like Phantom Girl, Lightning Lass, Shrinking Violet, Duplicate Girl, Shadow Lass, etc.

What I want:

Wildcats, Authority, Gen 13, Backlash

What they need to succeed:

At least three different versions of the JLA (80’s, late 90’s/early 2000’s, something more recent). By this I mean we should get a version of the main characters that fits in with those displays perfectly.

Teen Titans from both the 80’s and the more recent era (maybe the Johns book?)

Probably two versions of the JSA. Old school and more modern versions.

Legion of Doom

Core Green Lantern characters, Batman family, Superman family, and Amazons.

Weird and occult type characters (Doom Patrol, Constantine, Swamp Thing, JL Dark, etc).

Obviously they should give us the Inferior Five and the Legion of Substitute Heroes. 😆

Seriously though, what should be done:

Justice League of America (satellite era)

Justice League (International, America, Europe, Antartica)

Justice Society (original, and modern)

Titans (og Teen Titans, New Teen Titans, The Titans, Team Titans)

Legion of Superheroes

Secret Society of Super-Villains (a nice broad spectrum of villainy in its many incarnations)

Suicide Squad would also work for that

an All-Star Squadron would be a great base for their golden age (non-JSA) characters.  Then there’s got to be a home for non-team characters (I.e. Creeper, Manhunter(s), etc).  Green Lantern Corps should have some representation too.

I've also been thinking about this. I think if you do five figures in a wave and a build a figure, I definitely want to complete teams but I think you have to split the wave out and that's been my focus.

So in the first spot I would do a Superman family character and then rotate it the next way with a Batman family character.  This would go back and forth.

Spot two would be a JLA member focusing on the satellite League first then the Ba ha ha League, etc.

Spot three would be a JSA member focusing on Golden age and moving forward into the John's era.

Spot four would be the Titans.

Spot 5 would be a villain.

Each way would have at least one female.

Build a figure number one would be giganta for those who missed out the first time around.

My first wave would be the following:

Earth two Superman

zatanna in her JLA outfit with the red scarab up on her head

Golden age Mr terrific

dove The male version

Aqualad before he became tempest

Ragdoll
