@asm The really-low bicep cuts are odd, too, since there's no definition on her arms. And they could have worked a mid-torso joint in there, just make it a double ball peg right below her breasts, would have looked just fine if someone wanted to leave her upper torso lined up with the lower torso.
See I kinda want to see waves outside of story-specific stuff, more akin to the Mattel stuff. But I'm in the the line for character range, though I'm waiting for the TDKR blue Batman and Mutant Leader and modern comic Blue Beetle PPs to be upscaled which will come sooner or later surely.
For me the line is doing exactly what I want however I know the upcoming Batman-barrage (Rebirth, Owls, 1939, BvS, BAF Plas wave) is gonna be hefty. Wanna get more leaks and get an idea of what to expect in the next round of GL exclusives along with CE4.
Yeah, I don’t need themed waves specifically based around one story. A Legends style grab bag approach is fine with me. But I’d like to complete teams. Where is Hawkgirl, Todd??
@hbhfback see I think he's still running on the idea that everything needs to be spread out. On one hand I get it; don't give the team right away because then you're left with scraps, however on the other there are some essentials that are needed. This line will be running for a good while longer, it's got atleast another 5-7 years I'd say, all Internet complaints included, their model works and they're selling damn well so it's not going anywhere soon. Like I've said, I'm more interested in B-Z Listers, I'll take a Flying Fox over Hawkgirl any day, but I get you. The Collectors Edition has her written all over it tbh, that or dare I say, one of these more limited waves?
Kimd of a tangent but it would be interesting to see how much, if any, influence James Gunn would have over what's included in this line?
I'm just saying I think story-themed waves are exciting since it's a strong dose of one particular style and I generally think DC stories are more satisfying than Marvel. Gets me more interested in the source material. That's what Todd does - Metal, Last Knight on Earth, Blackest Knight, Morrison JLA (we think), DKR, etc. I like it.
If he's not going to do second waves around those stories then do mixed ones finishing them off. He could do a second COIE series easy or DKR. But if not do - Sons of Batman, Black Lantern Hawkman, Beast Boy, Cyborg and make the CtB that Trigon figure we though we were getting. It would be a cool wave and build off work they already have done. It's just all over the place and the movie inclusion makes it worse even if I get it.
I’ve always cherry-picked this line. I’ve purchased somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 McFarlane DC Multiverse figures over the life of the line, and at least 1/3 of those purchases were mistakes in retrospect. I mainly use them to augment my DC Direct New 52 and DC Direct Essentials 7” collections (and vice versa). McFarlane could have the DC license another five years, and it will still look completely fragmented. Team building is pretty much off the table.
Got serious FOMO and ordered the Monitor wave from MTS. I got the bundle for $135, then I applied the PUNCH15 code and got $20.25 off that. So before tax and shipping it comes to $28.75 per figure, which is less than the price of the Collector Edition figures, so the cost wasn't as bad as it first appeared to be. Plus I expect once these are gone they are going to gone for good. And the after market prices will be likely insane. So it seemed like a win/win.
This is actually a pretty strong wave for me. I really like the looks of the Spectre and Superman figures, and I've always had a soft spot for Wally West as Kid Flash, and I can always use another villain like Psycho-Pirate, so hopefully things go smooth and I can add these to my collection soon.
@ninjak feel the same. I am waiting until February or so to order however. If they're gone, that would suck, but I think it will be alright. I am somewhat waiting on news for the 40th Anniversary Transformers HasLab - I have all the others and love Transformers so I would like to budget. Then there's LooseCollector with the Extreme Universe. That could be, or rather should/will be a huge deal for me. Could prompt commissioning a figure from someone too.
So I would like those dominoes to fall before splurging on McFarlane right now, even though this wave looks damn strong. Like Xavion said, 1/3 of the purchases were mistakes and I think we all know better at this point. I saw Red Tornado yesterday, and he looks fine, but honestly the DCUC one is better. More dynamic and heroic sculpt with more paint. McFarlane doesn't sculpt heroic proportions well, the lats are too narrow on most releases. So I can see why sales off. But some of the other figures are dynamite, it's just odd.
Here is platinum Steel, perfectly chrome and comic accurate:
Honestly, I feel very done with this line. I dealt with cheap re-use…sucked up price hikes for characters I wanted…but I am just done with them playing games with loyal customers. Over and over again, it’s hard to see this stuff and not believe that they know exactly what they’re doing with this platinum chase crap, or with that MTS exclusive line.
You know what sucks? Wondering if I should get that platinum Captain Carrot for $60 from an eBay scalper or never own one. McFarlane has legitimately taken the joy out of collecting this line.
Kinda the same thing with the B&R Mr. Freeze - what IS this complete lack of paint job? His head is even missing the marbling texture and the blue eyes, and the gun is... so, so cheap.
And I know that if I put the work in myself, it will get re-released - what are the odds this Freeze will get re-released as a single with proper paint?
I have the Mattel glow Spectre and will hold off on McFarlane unless he springs a luminescent version on us. I feel like there’s a pretty good chance.
Honestly, I feel very done with this line. ... McFarlane has legitimately taken the joy out of collecting this line.
I realized yesterday how taxing it is. Thinking about finding Gold Labels at Walmart and their shitty stores and even worse website takes up more space in my head than I'd care to admit. Then playing Amazon/Target roulette with orders ... laying out $$ for 6 figs and returning 5 IF a platinum shows up. I mean, I have ZERO qualms about sticking it to McFarlane. You wanna make me chase? Fine. I'll stick you with the excess.
People might beat up on Hasbro, but at least their product managers don't suck.
I got Lobo and his bike yesterday from amazon. His left arm fell off 🙁 Being that it's amazon, I'll be able to return it no problem. But do I exchange it, or just return? I'm very satisfied with my Mattel SDCC Lobo, the dog is better, and the two Lobo's are the same size. The bike itself is great, but do I really have room for it?
I've always cherry picked the line, so it's nothing new for me. I kinda like that I don't feel the need to get every single, or even most of, the releases. That said, the recent price jumps (permanent or not) and limited availability of the Gold Labels is frustrating. I seem to remember Todd saying something along the lines of Gold Labels not being as much of a thing a while back- around the time they decided to pivot away from the awful "prototype" versions. That they'd pack Gold Labels a bit more frequently. I could be misremembering, but it's a shame to not see that come to fruition, especially on releases like the Bank Robber Joker and Interrogation Room Joker, which easily could've sold in stores, given the praise that TDK still gets all these years later.
I love the figures, and I love McFarlane, but I won't argue that some odd choices are being made. Todd's said before that being an independant company means a little more creative freedom and ability to keep the prices a little lower, but he seems to be going backwards on that. What's frustrated me most is the starting, but almost never finishing, of teams. Getting all of the main 2021 Suicide Squad members except for Ratcatcher 2 (who I've wanted the most out of any of them). Giving us animated Teen Titans Cyborg, but then none of the other members. At least we got all the main Dark Knights Metal variants, which look hella cool, granted (which, as we know, is Todd's MO), but not other, arguably more popular and in demand things.
Even when he tries to make amends, the choices are odd. Finally giving us the properly masked Catwoman from The Batman (as a hard to find, low production run Gold Label). Giving us the "proper" Hush Batman (after 2 or 3 incorrect releases). I appreciate the effort, don't get me wrong, but it's still a bit maddening.
Then again, I think that's just the state of collecting nowadays. The same can be said, albeit to different levels, for a lot of companies right now. I can think of Hasbro most egregiously, but that's just because they're the ones I probably collect most. Endless repaints, use of old/outdated sculpts when newer/better ones exist, frustrating store exclusives, skipping important characters, etc. At least in terms of mass market, widely available lines, I really don't know of one that isn't pulling frustrating moves in some sense. They're all guilty of something, and I really don't know why. Money is obviously a big part of it, and I'm all for a good exclusive, but it really does seem like they've all been listening far more to the big chains themselves- Target, Wal-Mart, etc., than the fans. Understandable, of course- you wanna keep a good relationship with your buyers, but not communicating more and being in touch with your audience is a bad thing. Don't give us what you think we want, or what you think is cool, when we're yelling at you with what we want and throwing fits about it. Not to say they would, or even should, give us everything we want- gotta leave them wanting and coming back somehow, but still.
I feel like action figure collecting is one of the few things that, once a good formula is found, can afford to stay relatively stagnant and still do good business. Whereas movies and shows need to change to continue feeling fresh and interesting, once a good line has a good price point, good execution of sculpts/articulation/etc/, I feel like they can continue along that base level with every subsequent release. Not saying lines can't adapt and change, but it's generally when they do, and mess with a good thing when they have it, that lines start tanking, or fan support drops out.
Don't give us what you think we want, or what you think is cool, when we're yelling at you with what we want and throwing fits about it.
A statement worth repeating, in hopes TPTB hear it. It's the blatant ignoring of fan wants and wishes that I think erodes interest the most - that one character missing, etc. If you have 20 versions you want to sell me - okay, good luck - but could you also include the one we've been asking for as well?
I don't know if this has been discussed previously - if so, I apologize but is there a reason why the McFarlane DC Multiverse Hush Superman's skin kind'a greenish/dead looking? All the copies I found in Target were colored the same. Just wondering.
