@gpmartin414 the simple reason as to why Plats are here are because stores need them. Without Plats, Walmart and Target were pulling out of selling the line. Plats were/are incentive.
No Plats, and these all are 100x more difficult to get
Bingo. I think pretty much everyone agrees that Platinums suck, particularly of the preferred uniform/outfit option, but I see them as a necessary evil for wide(r) distribution of the line.
You could make an argument that DC falls behind Star Wars, Marvel, Transformers, Power Rangers, and WWE in terms of popularity for "boys' toys," right now, so with limited shelf space, it makes sense that McFarlane has to do something to keep the big box stores interested.
While what you say is true - it's a very tricky balance with a dangerous downside. If you play the game of limited exclusivity like this to keep retailers interested at the cost of turning off more and more customers frustrated that they can't find the figures they want, it is ultimately self defeating with diminishing returns. When enough customers, frustrated that they can't find the version of the figure they want quit the line altogether the retailers stop ordering, even with exclusives dangled and the line dies. - or turns into a Batman only proposition (again).

But then how does every other major toyline manage to secure self-space at big retailers without having the concept of chase figures?

See my answer earlier. Basically, because they are more popular. Star Wars, Marvel, WWE, Transformers (heck, even TMNT) are continually anchored by content (movies, TV shows) that are popular with a broad audience, including kids.
DC, much through their own doing, don't have that (right now). Could it change under Gunn? Sure.
JLA video game figures up for preorder tomorrow
The JLTF wave looks interesting, except for Superman's face. I would rather see these in person before buying them, since they have that video game look to them. This looks like a wave that could go either way, but I'm thinking it might sell out. It wouldn't surprise me if they have comic accurate platinum figures.
Went ahead and preordered the set from MTS but since I wasn’t totally sure of it I went ahead and did a separate order for Wally in case I end up canceling the set order.
Wally looks to be the best figure here with the pixelation being minimally intrusive.
Finally got a better look at the JLTF wave. Easy pass for me with the pixelated painting for the video game look. It looks good for that reason but not to blend in with other figures, for me. Also, I was checking my Darkseid figure to the JLTF version and it fell apart on me when I picked it up. I was thinking I didn't put all of the parts together tightly and then I realized it's a mega figure and already came assembled. I'll just wait for the platinum comic book versions. LOL
@tenzilkem There are no platinum versions. I just checked the McFarlane website and all they offered were the single pack of the individual figures or the bundle for the entire wave. They weren't even offering the single case pack of of like 5 regular editions of the flash + a platinum, or any of the other figures from this assortment. So this is more like the COIE assortments where not a single figure gets a platinum release

Because those toy lines didn’t give us years of Metal Duke Thomas and multiple Joker Dragons before actually making sought after figures. They now need plats and chase figures to keep retailers interested because they released junk that got clearanced for years. And they’ve shrunk their customer base through smaller orders and others frustrated at the constant chase.
I’d bet money this is a Plastic Man situation where retailers get whole cases of platinum figures. Meanwhile these standard release JLA figures look horrendously bad, from the head sculpts to the laughable pixelation.
And it seems to be only reserved for comic figures. Where are the movie chase figures? I don’t see any. And yet they all seem to sell out. Maybe good figures will sell regardless of gimmicks? Who could have imagined.
Can confirm, from retailers I've spoken to, atleast Batman and Superman ARE getting plats. Expect them to be brick and mortar plats as is the new norm.
A pass for me but I'm cool with that; sights are now on the next CE wave and the Orion and Wildcat
this just been posted on instagram.
