I'm glad I stumbled in here.  I was getting nostalgic the other day.  Except for Transformers, I often will "thin the herd" of lines if it takes a turn that turns me off and I sold a lot of Mattel stuff.  I loved The Horsemen but the cookie cutter element just killed it for me like an overplayed song I can't listen to anymore.  But sometimes, I still feel that excitement they brought.  Man imagine if they had gone with Dave Vonner's Batman to update the line??  I bet they would still hold the license and there would a 2.0 Universe.  They should have just not been such cheap lazy asses with the license when it needed a little update.

Hasbro handles that aspect better, but that line has bored the shit out of me for years.  2024 could be different from listings, but we'll see if it's all safe reuse or not.  McFarlane had me fired up, I like the artist specific stuff, but he's pivoted off that recently, prices went up, and traditional looks are not his strength.  Knightfall Batman, Captain Carrot and the Spawn line are all pretty great though.

IMO the articulation was outdated when  more than half the line had single knees and elbows or couldn’t get past that 90 degree bend. Their Jaime Blue Beetle was a step in the right direction but it seemed like a one off thing. They even had that Kyle Rayner prototype with the double joints built in but the final product removed it. Also remember how the head articulation actually got worse after what…..the Despero wave? I remember the Chemo wave having less head rom than the early waves.

I would have bought the Alisters all over again had the included more functional articulation but apparently the bean counters at Mattel couldn’t be bothered.

Yeah, I understand your point. But having said that some of the biggest carve ups came when Mattel tried to implement more articulation. Dick Grayson Robin case in point. Ugly, ugly elbows - almost completely screwed the most awesome of sculpts/figures. I love my DCUC, I'll never part with them. The colors, the character selection, the sculpts and the overall Bronze age DC aesthetic made the line just fun to collect.

Still one of my all-time favorite collections ever.  I have the entire collection.  My all-time favorite collection is probably MOTU Classics, and I will always remember that sweet spot in time when there was both a MOTU Classics and DC Classics subscription with monthly figures on Matty Collector.

Also, when MOTU Classics and DCUC crossed over in 2 Packs!

But even with all the other DC figures I have from Mattel, DC Direct, DC Collectibles, Mezco, McFarlane and so on, DCUC were and still are my favorite.  Such an amazing assortment of characters, and such bright colors that pop.  And the articulation is more than enough for me.  I always liked how they moved and posed.

I truly miss the days of collecting this line.  But it will always be a favorite.

I was happy to see this thread tonight.  I hadn't realized there was a DC Universe Classics thread on here since The Fwoosh got back up and running.

I've been going through my old collection of these and I'm shocked how well these figures hold up.  Bummer that it ended the way it did especially since it will always feel incomplete to me.  So many weird character selection decisions were made at the end of the line when it should have been time to focus on getting the missing figures made.

@bananaman Yes some of the joints did look ugly, but they should have kept trying and innovating. Didn’t they at least go pinless at some point when the line went to subscription?  Remember the rocker ankles?  That artic was very hit or miss. But rather than try and improve it, they just decided to get rid of it and give us ankles that only up and down. That was just effing lazy.

However, at least DCUC gave us a classic Wonder Woman by the fourth wave and not make us wait almost 4 years for one…..and then charge us $10 more for it. Lol.

While I’m sure everyone feels this line is incomplete due to an abrupt end and some questionable character selection at the tail end of the line it is really commendable how much they knocked out in a short time. It felt like early on all the slots were used wisely and there was a real urgency to actually complete teams instead of keeping fans chasing the dragon like marvel legends does. Having a complete classic doom patrol, metal men, and almost all of the major new gods completed is something hasbro would draw out for decades.  Its been 20 years of marvel legends and we still have 3 inhumans.

I still prize many of my DCUC figs, and have unloaded very few.  In terms of articulation, they are all flawed creatures, for sure.  But the character selection overall is pretty stunning, IMO.

I still keep an eye out for a MIB Gentleman Ghost. Never got to complete Giganta.....

I was all-in the Four Horsemen back when they took over in 2003.  The MOTU relaunch was awesome and I loved their Spawn/Youngblood/Wetworks stuff so that helped.  I remember getting the SDCC exclusive Batman that year then getting Attack Armor Batman and Bat Signal Batman from Europe via ebay.  Scarecrow and Bane too.  Loved them.  Attack Armor Batman was my default HUSH Batman once I did a headswap.  I loved DCSH Superman and his allies and enemies. Beautiful figures.

For DCUC my faves were:

Orion

Red Tornado

Metamorpho

Hawkman

Flash

Captain Cold

Atom Smasher

Metallo

S.T.R.I.P.E.

Magog

I've been a DC collector since Super Powers, but I think it reached its height with DCUC. I was collecting the whole line for the first fifteen waves or so, and man, was it fun making wishlists and wondering what the next random group of characters were going to appear next. Bronze age wasn't a rarity, and things like the Legion set were possible. I had such high hopes for Geo-Force or Halo to pop up in that line. Can't wait until forty years from now when they do a throwback line to DCUC! Hey, if Super Powers can come back (from McFarlane of all companies), anything's possible...

Youre speaking my language Super Camel.   MOTUC is also my favorite figure line ever -  but DCUC brought a lot of the same greatness to the table (small wonder since they were designed by the same people).    I had always hoped that at a minimum DCUC would get to all the characters they gave us in the animated 4" collection - and they made it a fair bit of the way - but sadly not all the way.

One of my most favorite things about the uniformity of the body types and articulation is that it makes it easier to make customs of the characters they didn't get to.    The collection is missing any number of great classic characters still -  Aqualad, Vibe, Mon El, Dawnstar... don't get me started.   Heck they could have done a second whole Legionaires set and I would have been so stoked.  Anyway -  I amassed a fair number of extra figures to be able to grow the collection -  so I have those characters on my shelf along with the likes of Geo Force and Zauriel and etc.

I can't imagine ever taking down my DCUC display though.

Who says take it down?
I haven’t gotten rid of a single DCUC figure and I have all the McFarlanes!

Well, some of us don't have infinite space to display our figures.    I got three walls for figure displays in my office.   The biggest wall has Marvel legends because that's the biggest collection.   One wall has DCUC and a couple of shelves of Justice League Unlimited and the last wall has MOTUC/Thundercats, Silverhawks, Conan Ultimates and whatever other 1/10 figures work in the display.    My poor GI Joe classified collection is limited to the low wall space under my window on the 4th wall.    So any display of McFarlane figures would require me taking down something else and I won't display them alongside the DCUC figures - the scale disparity offends my eyes...  DCUC wins

Dhunter...are you the one who does those thorough YouTube reviews with all the figure comparisons? If so thank you! They've been so helpful over the years.

C'mon, It's Dhunter. He has everything. Probably even has a basement where he keeps a real Michael Keaton in a Batman suit.

I miss DCUC. Not Mattel having DC license, considering how bad the last couple of waves were, but in general. Yes, the articulation is outdated, some figures are covered in white dust, same body molds. But they weren't afraid to give us classic looks and collection looked uniform, consistent.

I prefer DCUC line to DC Multiverse figures all day. I wish I hadn't sold my Batman and his Villains collection or Darkseid. But it is what it is. At least we can have classic looks from Medicom.
