What? You didn’t expect Adam Power to blast back onto the action figure scene without some guys to knock around, did you? Of course not! That is why the Four Horsemen have deployed multiple double-arms and multiple double consonants to fight against the leader of the Power Lords. GGRIPPTOGG, GGRABBTARGG, and the GGRAPPTIKK SOLDIER are shipping as well.
I don’t think I am saying anything controversial when I proclaim that, within the Power Lords line, the bad guys are way cooler than the heroes. Sure, I say that about Masters of the Unvierse (and some other lines as well), but with with this line, it is not even close. That is not to take away from Adam Power, his alter ego, or any of his friends, but as far as the designs go, the baddies are where it is at. That all starts with the Four-Armed Brute Ggripptogg (man, I am going to be tired of typing “G” and “P” and “B” by the time this is all over) and his Ferrikonian army.
While all three of these releases are based on the same basic configuration, all of them have their own personalities and accents to bring a unique quality to each one. While Ggripptogg and Ggrabbtargg are unique characters, there are enough parts offered across these three releases to allow you to build all kinds of characters, soldiers, and grunts.
Let’s take a look at all three.
GGRIPPTOGG
Name: Ggripptogg
Origin: The Planet Ferrikon
Weapon: The Super Mace
Ggripptogg is a fearsome brute whose four war-arms and double-faced head hold entire planets in the grip of his fear. His empire streched from one end of the galaxy to the other until Arkus captured it from him. He now exists as a mindless yet hateful follower of the evil dictator.
Ggripptogg is the leader of this crew and, as I can tell, has the most sway and history in the vintage line. All of these releases are based on his original design. He is, like all of the rest of these figures, based on the Glyos joint system, and if you have gotten any of the preview figures, you pretty much know what you are dealing with in terms of build.
What really puts these figures over the top, though, is the paint, which is just fantastic. Adam Power is great too, but the air brushing, tiny details, and accents are so good here. The downfall of that is it makes a lot of those preview figures fall short because they were so light on paint applications.
While Adam Power’s transformation into Lord Power was settled in separate figures in this line, the Ggripps retain the “two-headed” effect by turning his head. This works a bit better than the Adam Power effect would have, so it is subtle. This figure only includes one head, but the Soldier actually comes with pieces to help enhance your Ggripptogg.
He also comes with his signature weapon, the Super Mace, and you have the option of changing from a club to a staff. If I had anything to grumble about, it is that I am not overly excited about the design of the weapon, so I would have liked to have gotten another something to arm him up.
GGRABBTARGG
Name: Ggrabbtargg
Origin: The Planet Ferrikon
Weapon: The Super Lance
Ggrabbtargg is one of Ggripptogg’s elite sergeants in the Ferrikonian army. The sergeant class is made up of immensely powerful warriors who are heavily armored and crave destruction. More importantly perhaps, is that Ggrabbtargg is Ggripptogg’s closest confidant within these ranks, making him either Ggripptogg’s greatest ally or his greatest threat.
*Please note that this figure is Fan Club Exclusive
Ggrabbtargg is named as Ggripptogg’s second-in-command and closest confidant. I also have named this figure my favorite of the three. While his orange color is more garish than the deep rust color of Ggripptogg, there is something very alien about it that makes it fit the more classic “from another world” archetype. The paint is just as clean on him as his commander, but the black accents make him quite imposing.
I also like the head used for this figure the best out of all of those employed for the Ferrikonians. It is brutish and evil-looking, and the hard lines in his face up to his sloping brow are very imposing. His outfit color is also darker, so you know this guy means business.
He is credited with using the “Super Lance” for his weapon of choice, but aside from the top “gem” color being different, it is the same as the Super Mace. Again, I would have liked to have seen a different weapon for him, at the very least to make the lance visually different from the mace.
GGRAPPTIKK SOLDIER
Name: Ggrapptikk Soldier, The Four Fisted Trooper
Origin: The Planet Ferrikon
Weapon: The Super Lance
Ggrapptikk Soldiers and Ggrapptikk Grunts make the bulk of Ggripptogg’s Ferrikonian army. With their mighty four arms and Super Lances, these soldiers are armed and ready to wreak havoc on the galaxy. Ggrapptikk Soldiers vary in appearance and skills, but when combined in an army, they are a unified force for evil.
The Ggrapptikk Soldier is the army builder figure of the set and he is also a deluxe release. While his dominant color scheme is blue, he comes with a lot more parts to help you make several different iterations so that you can have different soldiers and grunts in your ranks. His “main” head can turn with two different looks, just like Ggripptogg, but he also features a “helmeted head” in all black, as well as Ggrabbtargg head in blue.
This set also features some parts that you can use to help enhance your Ggripptogg figure. There is an alternate set of arms that can be switched out at the elbow to have the hands stacked on top of each other, rather than side by side. While I do like that it gives you more options for the main brute, I think we could have also benefited from more pieces for this actual figure so you can achieve more combinations for different looks.
So, while this figure is an army builder, he will also run you a bit more thanks to all of the additional pieces. This line has a very, very small production run, so if you are wanting to stock Ggripptogg’s ranks with plenty of soldiers, you probably should not delay.
The Power Lords are finally back out of the gate, and Adam Power has brought some impressive foes with him. I am much more a fan of these three Ferrikonians and they have a great look to them. Ggrabbtargg is certainly my favorite, but while these are built on the same base, there is still a bit of diversity for you to gravitate towards. The card back also features a picture of Sydot the Supreme, Adam Power’s ally, so I would expect we will be seeing him sooner than later.
As I said, these figure will probably go fast, so head over to Store Horsemen to lock in your sets!
*Thanks for reading and thanks to the Four Horsemen for sending these along for a preview.
