Welcome back to another edition of Demanded Characters. January is magic month for our demanded characters. This week we focus on a character that would make Wal-Mart cringe: Dan Cassidy, the Blue Devil
Taking a look at last week’s poll, we have a dead heat. While some say to make the classic in order to show some loyalty to the Super Powers figure, there is an equal amount of support for a more modern costume.
Dan Cassidy was a special effects technician working on B movies. He created a suit for one of the movies that he wore. He specialized in real effects, using machines and gadgets in movies rather then visual post production effects. The new suit was for the movie Blue Devil. Cassidy wore the suit; which gave him increased strength, the ability to create fire, and a rocket powered trident. During filming of the movie Dan’s girlfriend, Sharon, accidentally set the demon Nebiros free. Dan used the Blue Devil suit to fight off the demon and send him back to where he came from, but not before he was blasted with demonic energy. The blast grafted the costume to Dan’s skin and turned him permanently into the Blue Devil.
Cassidy, now stuck in this form, found himself turning to the one place everyone seems to turn to, Star Labs. While there he had a run in with some super villains, throwing him into the superhero world. Dan would become a Superhero, working with all the big names, but always struggling to rid himself of the Blue Devil costume. He joined the JLA and it seemed that weird occurrences followed him no matter what. This wore Dan out and decided to leave the hero game.
Dan retired, but when he was offered the chance to become an actor again he jumped at the opportunity. There was one draw back: the offer was from Neron, and Dan would lose the life of a friend to get his bargain. In the end though, Dan was a hero at heart and cheated Neron out of the soul he signed over, dying in the process. Dan was later resurrected as a real demon, once again joining the hero ranks to stop evil. He was once again killed but would come back a second time bigger and stronger, now carrying the trident of Lucifer. The Blue Devil currently fights the magical problems and villains of the DCU as part of the Shadowpact.
