Marvel Select Review – Green Goblin

Hitting next week is the Marvel Select Green Goblin. Now, I know what you’re saying. Another Green Goblin? And I’m here to say, hell yes, another Green Goblin.

Now, I’m not new to Marvel Select. And yet, I’m not seasoned either. I’ve picked up a few. Thanos. Watcher. Thing. Juggernaut. A few years back I didn’t pay much attention. The line seemed to be all over the place, not making a big attempt at completing any one theme. But as the line has aged, pieces have started falling into place. Giant Sized X-men, Avengers, and the one that has pushed me over the edge into MS buying territory, the movie Avengers. After picking up Hasbro’s 6 inch Thor and Captain America movie figures I just wasn’t satisfied. Enter Marvel Select. Boom. I’m in. My MS display and love of this scale is growing very, very rapidly.

Before I begin, let me say that for some reason my camera has a bear of a time with purple. So some pics may look a little washed out. The package shot is the best representation of the figure, color-wise. Keep that in mind.

So, enter Green Goblin. Yeah, we’ve had a few in various lines. Hell, had one is this line. But this one, something about this one, seems to have a little….evil….to it. A little sinister. Maybe it’s the pupil-less eyes. Either way, this one looks like he’d shove a pumpkin bomb up your ass and not think twice about it.

The packaging is pretty standard Marvel Select packaging. Great view of the figure before you buy. Nice artwork and various Goblin themed things scattered all over the card. But my favorite thing is the side art…

I find myself saving these. Always a nice piece, all the same size. Someday they will look good on the wall, running along the ceiling, butted up side by side. Or a montage wall. In the living room hopefully, if I can talk the wife into it.

Little bit about the sculpt. Very nice. It’s all there. The hat, the pointy boots, the scale armor. All very clean, very crisp. This one is more of a modern spin compared to MS’s first more classic Green Goblin. And it works. Like I said before, there’s something menacing about him.

Paint is clean. I do notice that there is a scuff on the nose and chin, probably from the packaging. I dig the variation in greens between the mask and the body suit. A lighter shade for the mask with appropriate shading to punch up the details and a little grittiness. Darker tone for the body, but with kick by adding an metallic drybrush. Makes it look a little bit armor-like. The purple is shaded in all the right places. I did have a little paint rub at the right knee, as the knee was stuck out the package. I got it loose, but I scraped the paint a bit. Not noticeable as it’s on the back.

Articulation is spiffy. Another reason my interest in Marvel Select has increased exponentially. I don’t need super articulation. Just enough to strike a few poses. Goblin has enough to do that, from a nice vanilla pose to a fairly impressive flat footed, halfway into the splits pose. And of course the riding the glider poses. He has a peg that goes forward into the foot where it swivels, created a pretty decent rocker ankle replacement. With some creative twisting a turning he could probably get into a deeper position than I have him above.

Accessory-wise, he comes with his fashionable man-purse, an extra right hand holding a pumpkin bomb, and of course his glider. I really, REALLY like the glider and the smoke effect. At least the look of it. Only problem I have is that the angle of the glider can not be changed. Not a terrible problem to have, but it cuts down on potential posing options. So it’s a trade off. The interchangeable right hand is very tight but after a few times changing it out it becomes less worrisome. The purse is very flexible and hangs naturally.

Overall, I’m glad to have this Goblin on the shelf. I like this representation the most out of the Goblins I have, and a great addition to my growing Marvel Select display. In a perfect world the hat wouldn’t hinder his ability to look up (which I have no idea how that would be achieved) and the glider’s angle would be adjustable, but as is he’s more than adequate. Now I need a good MS Spider-Man!
