Hasbro: Marvel Legends Crimson Dynamo Series Spymaster Review

The Crimson Dynamo wave reviews continue with the old Iron Man Villain, Spymaster. Now I’ve read a lot of comics in my day, but I must confess I was not really familiar with this fellow outside of his Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe entry. Since that was one of my favorite books growing up, this is in no way a knock on Spymaster for me. Let’s take a look!

Usual box scenario: Big window, snazzy artwork. Effective, but I don’t lose any sleep discarding it ASAP.

Spy guy is pretty light on the accessories with just a blaster cast in red and the BAF piece. It’s a familiar weapon and does a decent job conveying the idea of Spymaster’s weapon from the books, but it doesn’t really match a specific version.

The big ‘ol chonk of a leg looks great on the rest of the body and again I’m glad I got the wave so far. I’m digging this ‘bot.

This guy is a classic Marvel Legends figure in that he’s that very common Bucky cap base body with a couple new parts with the belt and head. It’s effective for these low-tier guys, though I am missing the pockets on the sides of the legs a little.

Articulation is the standard ML and none of the new parts interfere with that great movement. It is funny that I am finding that straight waist swivel more unsightly as time goes on.

Paint is minimal with the figure being cast in mostly the yellow and blue plastic of the costume. It works for me for this guy as he’s got a bright, jumped right off the page look and the plastic isn’t too glossy or too matte, it’s right in the sweet spot. I like the Spymaster symbol tampo, though I wish the eyes were a little more solid as they go outside of the lines of the eyelid sculpting if you look up close.

Overall, Spymaster isn’t a terribly exciting figure, but he gets the job done which feels appropriate for this level of work-a-day villain. I’m also glad to get an Iron Man baddie since Marvel Legends is a line that tends to be packed with Iron Man re-dos, he could use some morts to fight.
