One of the biggest draws to any line has to be the extras. And when a figure comes to you by way of a $80 price tag, it better come with some stuff.
Luckily for us and Mezco, that is generally the case. But like anything else, there is often still, even with a plastic baggy full of optional parts, an item or two that you can’t help but feel like would have sealed the deal, had they been in that box. But, if you’ve been in this hobby for a while, or you have a little extra eBay money, MadeForRobots has some suggestions that might help finish off that display- maybe even stuff you just forgot you own.
It’s all the Punisher’s fault, really. When Mezco released their Fully Loaded Previews Exclusive version of Frank Castle, they packed it with a plethora of accessories. No less than twenty extra items were squeezed into the fancy tin, and that’s not even counting additional hands and head sculpts. It ruined me forever. I’d eagerly fawn over their unique character sheets whenever they announced a new figure in their One: 12 Collective line, often more interested in what came with the action figure than the actual action figure. However, there was no way Mezco could continuously match the sheer bang for your buck I received with that fabled Punisher. I would be forced to take matters into my own hands and hunt down my own extra accessories; The Flash absolutely needed an aerobic time machine and Space Ghost had to have a coffee mug sporting his own silhouette, dammit. I have spent an unhealthy amount of time collecting extras for my figures and so, I now share some of my worst kept secrets with you. I hope they complete you half as much as they complete me.
Disclaimer: These are all “as is”, so no custom items on this list. That would be a whole other article that I hope to convince The Fwoosh to publish, so let’s stretch this out shall we?
DC Direct Beast Boy as monkey – This sweet green chimp comes to us from a 2003 Classic Teen Titans box set. Sure, his two points of articulation seems pretty measly when compared against his fellow primate, Blip’s, thirteen points. However, he IS green and looks pretty sweet posed beside Arsenal. Alas, this is the closest we’ll likely ever get to a Mezco Teen Titans roster.
Marvel Legends Wand of Watoomb – The SDCC Marvel Legends Collector’s Vault box set was pretty sweet for a few reasons (I love you, flocked Moon Boy!), but chief among them for me was this 1/12 scale favorite mystical artifact of Doctor Strange. Way out of scale with its intended line, but 3 ¾” fans’ loss is our gain.
NECA Evil Dead 2 decapitated Linda head & tape recorder – I absolutely adore Saim Raimi’s Evil Dead films, and Part Deux is the crowning achievement of that series. So while I really enjoyed Mezco’s Ash offering, there were some huge omissions in the accessory department. The tape recorder that set off the worst night in Ash’s life and his dead girlfriend’s undead bitey head? Yeah, those really should have been included and now they can be!
Art Asylum Space Ghost: Coast to Coast talk show accessories – This one is likely the worst kept secret on this list, as almost every owner of Mezco’s Space Ghost probably has already snagged this, but it’s popularity demands its inclusion. The desk and stool are awesome on their own, but throw in a Space Ghost logo-branded coffee mug and cue cards? Excellent. For bonus points, grab the Invisible variant that includes everything the regular edition does, BUT is cheaper on the aftermarket and allows you to have a creeper intergalactic hero hides in plain sight!
Marvel Legends (itsy bitsy) Ant-Man and the Wasp – You can find these two in varying Legends releases, such as the most recent Vintage/retro wave. No matter which ones you grab, they make a perfectly scaled shrunken down duo to buzz around Captain America’s head until he murders them with a can of RAID.
DC Direct Classic Silver Age Krypto – You knew this was coming, right? Krypto is SO obvious a choice to want to pack in with Superman, that I’m pretty amazed Mezco went with the Bottle City of Kandor over him. An flying alien boy needs his flying alien dog, am I right? There are a few iterations of the pup out there, but this one that came in the Superboy and Supergirl box set jibes the most with the One: 12 Collective’s more real world bent. (Streaky the super cat is in there too, but I need material for another one of these articles, so keep it to yourself.)
DC Direct Silver Age Flash/Kid Flash Cosmic Treadmill – In a pretty amazing box set that also includes a 1:1 scale “working” Flash ring, there is to be found one of the best accessories on this list. This Scarlet Speedster’s aerobic time machine blows that undersized DC Icons version out of the water. A repaint would probably help it (the garish coloring is based on an old Flash comic cover), but this thing is wonderful. Tell your significant other it’s to inspire you to run off those double cheeseburgers and buy it!
Diamond Select Electronic Command Chair – Despite the disappointing knowledge that we’ll never complete the original Enterprise crew in Mezco form, Captain Kirk still needs somewhere to sit. DST truly outdid themselves with this piece, and it scales perfectly with the One: 12 line. Throw in the great sound FX and voice recordings of ol’ Bill himself and you’ve got really the only lounge chair for your toys that you’ll ever need.
Marvel Legends Lockheed – We’re approximately twenty years away from getting a Mezco One: 12 Kitty Pryde (if ever) but we certainly don’t have to wait for our ol’ pal Logan to have his own personal pet purple lap dragon.
Diamond Select Ultimate Captain America shield & flag – Let’s be clear: Golden Age Cap is the best Cap, and anything I can do to make Mr. Rogers look more classic on my shelf will most certainly be done. After trying out some Legends triangle shields that ended up too small, I found this one that really hit the sweet spot for me. Throw in the bonus that he comes with a kick-ass flag too? This is a no-brainer. You can also give the flag to Supes so he can have a flag-waving stare down with his commie doppelganger. It’s the 1980s all over again!
