Mythic Legions: Coliseum is a wave of new Mythic Legions characters created from the existing parts library. The story centers on warriors who come together to battle in gladiatorial fights in the Mercurian Coliseum. I completely missed the pre-orders for this wave, but was lucky enough to be able to order one of the surplus figures that went on sale last week. Let’s take a look at the Dwarf Warrior, Halmyr Goldentooth.
Halmyr comes with a spear, a sword, a war hammer and two removeable shoulder armor parts. The spear and sword should be familiar to all who collect Mythic Legions as they have been included with many figures in the line. They are two of the better weapons and feature nice sharp sculpting and are cast in solid plastic that holds it’s shape well. I also really like the metallic finish and the wash these weapons.
The war hammer is a little less common as it came with a weapons pack. It’s nice to get it in a silver finish and I like how the wash brings out the intricate details of this weapon.
The sculpt is all re-use, which shouldn’t be a surprise, since that’s part of the business plan and the aesthetic of this line. I like that they switched it up a bit and used the spikier Orc boots and an Orc armor pauldron.
The head sculpt is Thord Ironjaw repainted with wings attached to the helmet instead of Horns. It’s quite effective as a new character for my money.
The paint is really the star on these figures and the dark metallic brown used on the majority of the armor is quite beautiful. The washes and contrasting colored parts of the armor are done really well with minimum slop. The one downside is that there is paint on the elbow hinge that was scraped off, but the plastic underneath matches well enough that I don’t find it too objectionable.
The movement is also quite nice for such a short, stocky, heavily armored figure. The hips and legs have such great mobility and the armor flaps hardly hinder posing at all. Halmyr has the following articulation:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, ankles and knees
- Ball and socket waist and neck
- Swivel thigh and forearms
The head movement is somewhat limited by the intersection of the extra long beard and the bulky shoulder armor.
Overall, Halmyr is a great example of why I keep collecting this line. He’s a solid chunk of nicely articulated, painted, and sculpted fantasy action figure. I’m still thoroughly enjoying the variations on the main Dwarf sculpt and intend to collect as many of them as are made, but I would love to see them add more pieces to the library like bare arms or a different chest piece. If you missed Halmyr, you can still grab one from BigBadToystore.
