SDCC 2017 Hopes: Mezco One:12 Collective The Bride

In late 2016 Mezco dipped their big toe into the classic Universal Monsters pool by releasing Frankenstein’s Monster in the One:12 Collective line, and the figure turned out to be pretty darn awesome. Frankenstein was announced quite some time ago, and since his announcement and his actual release, Mezco has been pretty quiet on the Universal Monsters front. Now, since SDCC is the time of year when dreams come true (unless you’re hoping for a 6-inch G.I. Joe line, that is), I’m really hoping we see a new announcement in the Universal Monsters One:12 line, and I do think the most likely candidate at this point is the Bride of Frankenstein. Last week Universal announced they’re reviving their stable of monsters as the “Dark Universe,” a series of interconnected films that will crossover with one another in a similar fashion to how Marvel has handled their cinematic universe. It’s all kicking off this year with The Mummy, so with the Universal Monsters poised to make a big comeback with the general public, now is definitely the time for companies like Mezco to capitalize on the hype.

Mezco has stated that the rights to the monsters are some of the more difficult to obtain and work with, so while I don’t know much about the legal ins and outs of this, I’m hoping that since Frankenstein has already seen release that more characters from that particular family of films are within Mezco’s reach.

The Bride would be a perfect follow-up to Frankenstein, not only for the obvious close connection the characters have, but because she would help drive sales for Frankenstein himself. I know there are fans out there who haven’t picked up Frankenstein yet because there’s no guarantee more of the Monsters would be released, so the Bride would help ease those concerns. And like Frankenstein, a PX Exclusive “colorized” edition could be released as well.

The soft goods approach of the One:12 Collective line is probably our best bet for getting a really good Bride figure. There have been attempts over the years and some have been decent, but none have perfectly nailed it. Her costume consists of a long flowing robe and bandaged arms, so it seems it’s within Mezco’s wheelhouse.

Now, my worry is her robe could turn out to look like just a big piece of detail-deficient cloth. That’s always the risk with soft-goods robes, but with the different fabric choices Mezco has used for superhero capes, there could be something that can be used to create a convincing-looking robe for the figure.

Honestly, I’ll be thrilled with any One:12 Universal Monsters announcement. Any. Because I was so impressed with their Frankenstein, I decided I would support the line by getting on board with whatever figure they released next. But my money is on the Bride being our best hope for a second figure in the line. So this is the announcement I’m going to be hoping for most as I make my way through the news of new Marvel Legends waves, new Star Wars Black Series waves, and, heck, even more Mezco One:12 Collective releases.

C’mon, Mezco, make it happen — get us another One:12 Universal Monster!
