Professional gamers? Sports websites covering the tournaments? What? Yeps, that’s right — professional video gaming is the new thing with millions of dollars of prize money at stake. Kids, young adults and the like are jumping online to compete in tournaments worldwide.
Figma is release three new figures from some of these multiplayer online battle arena games, specifically LOL and Dota2. “LOL” is League of Legends, developed by Riot Games and has millions of players globally. Dota2 which is the followup to the Defense of the Ancients, now developed by Valve, is another multimillion-player game. This is great news for toy collectors that play the game, but also for the players that might want their own physical avatar sitting on their desk.
Delving into game properties has been somewhat of a risk, sometimes the lines are incredibly successful, other times not so good. Magic the Gathering is one of the biggest card games out there, but poor production releases of the Funko toys led to poor sales, as witnessed by quick markdowns.
Valve and Riot Games have chose to market and sell their Figma figures on their own websites, probably where they will get the most attention from their audience. This is a great move as it looks to mean that the game developers are directly involved in the design and development of their figures, as well as the marketing. And with so many potential customers they are guaranteed to succeed.
This is great news for toy collectors, specially those that are looking to bolster their fantasy collections with new and different characters. And with Figma tackling both, there should be some consistency between the licenses, making for some exciting shelves and Instagram-ing.
