When Hasbro added this preview figure of Rogue One’s Jyn Erso to their SDCC exclusive lineup, she shot to the top of my list. I’m really looking forward to Rogue One and meeting all the new characters joining the Star Wars universe, and Jyn has made a favorable impression in trailers. How did the figure turn out? Read on …
Sergeant Erso comes with a couple of accessories, including a blaster and a removable scarf. The scarf is great because it’s form-fitted to her head, but it’s cast in soft-enough plastic that she can move her head around well. Scarfs and hoods are tough to get right, and this one works and looks to lay like the hood does in the trailers.
The blaster is a tiny, detailed bit of plastic that fits well in her gun hand and the holster. The holster has a little strap that holds the gun in and is also cast in soft plastic so it doesn’t hinder movement.
This figure will be re-released down the line in the regular Black Series. This version cost about $5 more than the regular Black Series figures, has fancier packaging, and includes the above four photos on nice card stock. They are really neat, and for a guy with “gotta have it now” syndrome, they are a nice bonus. They do serve to show that final figure’s paint job doesn’t quite match up with the prototype, unfortunately.
The sculpt is really nice with appropriate clothing details, wrinkles, and textures. I especially like the way the hood can be worn and the head can still move around in different ways.
I feel like the likeness is good, I can see Felicity in there, but it’s harmed by some really simplistic eye paint.
The whites of the eyes stray a bit outside the sculpt and the eyebrow placement could be a lot better.
I also think the semi translucent plastic used on the head doesn’t show the details as well as a painted head sculpt does. My figure has some dirt smudges around the face, but I didn’t clean them since I kind of like the look of them.
The articulation scheme should be familiar to fans of the Black Series. Jyn has the following POA:
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, wrists, and ankles
- Ball-and-socket mid-torso
- Thigh and boot swivel
- Double-hinged knees
The addition of the boot swivel is nice, but the neck doesn’t have the ball-and-socket joint, which is really important for natural poses.
Jyn is a pretty small figure, and while the plastic on the limbs does feel a little bit gummy, she holds poses well.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with this figure and so thankful to my friends for the help obtaining her at SDCC. The figure is about 90 percent there; she just needed a little more love with the eye paints.
