S.H. Figuarts: Dragonball Z Super Saiyan Vegeta Premium Color Edition

Bandai S.H. Figuarts DragonBall Z Super Saiyan Vegeta featured

Vegeta is a recent release of Bandai’s S. H. Figuarts Dragonball Z action figures. Super Saiyan Vegeta was originally released many moons ago (like 2011), and this time around Vegeta gets a darker blue suit, more of a flesh-toned face, a stronger yellow/gold for his hair, painted toes, and an extra set of hands.

Vegeta is key character in Dragonball Z as he is somewhere between the worst villain ever seen and a reformed bad guy turned good, helping Goku, Piccolo and their gang out in the quest for/to protect the Dragonballs. He’s basically turned into a Wolverine type of character and has a huge fan base. This is one of many releases of Vegeta and represents him in his “Super Saiyan” mode, where his hair turns all yellow and gold and he’s super powerful. There is a regular version in his full armor and eye glass and tail with normal black hair, but it’s a monster expensive collector’s item (the kind you wish you had picked up when you saw a ton of them in that comic shop that one time).

There is nothing remarkable about the sculpt of the body; it’s a pretty standard costume and look from S.H. Figuarts, and they’ve rehashed this figure so much there isn’t anything new to talk about. It looks like Vegeta and is great to display with the rest of the Dragonball Z group.

The head sculpt is where this figure really sells. There are three faces that can be swapped out, and each one captures Vegeta perfectly. He’s got normal grumpy face, really angry face, and mischievous face. They are a load of fun to use and make great “instagram” scenes. The hair is also done well and captures the energy of the Super Saiyan transformation.

But the real magic of this figure is in the colors. Bandai’s been good about releasing manga versus anime colors, and Vegeta’s colors pop like they did in the anime. The first release has a light blue that seems to more fall in line with the manga coloring. The blue really kills it on this release. The hair color is also excellent; this yellow/gold coloring has a lot of shine and pops like crazy. It’s enough to make one want all the Super Saiyan variants. The face, or flesh parts, look a lot better than the original release; there is more flesh and less yellow. Bandai made an effort to make certain the head and hair did not bleed into one another. Finally, the toes are painted, another manga vs anime change as the anime Vegeta has yellow toes.

As with any S.H. Figuarts, collectors are treated to a number of pack-ins. In this case, extra faces and hands. These are pretty much the same as the original release with the exception of the grabby hands, which made their appearance in the black-haired version. Lots of fun to be had with the hands.

This Vegeta is a must have, whether you like the Super Saiyan versions or not, Vegeta is a core character and this is a classic look for him. The new paint apps really pop, and the base figure is still fun to pose and play with after years of reissues.
