Back around 2007, DC Direct (the precursor to DC Collectibles) took a gamble on the vinyl toy/designer toy craze. In conjunction with toy designer Monster5 they introduced to the world a new, blocky “hulk-like” figure… UniFormz.
The first figure of the line was, of course, Batman. Always Batman. Subsequent releases saw Superman, Green Lantern, and, finally, the Flash. Along with the traditionally costumed figure, DC Direct also released two different variations of the each figure. For the Flash, DC Direct released Professor Zoom and the topic of today’s review: Black Flash.
Black Flash, being the manifestation of death for speedsters, is one creepy dude. The UniFormz figure is no exception. From the metallic red paint streaming upwards from his eyes to his death-eating grin, Black Flash has the corner kept on creepiness.
Like the rest of the UniFormz line, the figure measures 8 inches tall and features 12 points of articulation (he twists and turns at the head, shoulders, forearms, wrists, waist, and feet). The thing with the UniFormz figures is that they are deceptively heavy looking. Handling the figure, you expect some kind of heft, but they’re as light as, well… a vinyl toy. Which is to say, not heavy at all.
Along with the blocky style, the UniFormz feature oversized fists. You half expect the figure to fall over with the arms in any other position besides downward, but Black Flash holds his position rather nicely. Surprisingly, you can also get him in a bunch of different poses too, which is atypical of vinyl figures.
The figure’s got a nice black-ish matte finish, which makes the metallic red (and whites) on the figure really pop. Overall, the UniFormz Black Flash could be the best figure of the line. Finding him (or any of the variants for that matter) MIB for under $100 is a bit of a stretch. Once in awhile they pop up loose on eBay for 25 bucks or so, which is well worth it, especially if you’re a fan of the Flash (or any of the UniFormz characters).
