The Star Wars team revealed some fun stuff at Celebration Japan today. Or yesterday. Or tomorrow. I don’t know how timezones work, but I do want to write about toys.
The Ronin figure wasn’t revealed in Japan, but it is sorta exclusive. It’s up on Amazon now for the shocking price of $69.99. I liked this animated short and like the look of the figures, but can’t see my way clear to spending that much. The packaging ain’t that snazzy. It also makes me damn scared of what that GI Joe Cold Slither box set is going to run me.
The updated Han and Chewie look solid and Han especially needed an update, but I’m not 100% sold on this Ford portrait. It feels like the sculptors at Hasbro lately have been putting too much of the old actor’s face into the younger version. Like Ford’s slightly lopsided lip isn’t as prominent when he was younger, and grew more noticeable as he got older, but they really highlight that on sculpts lately.
This Chewie looks pretty good to me as I like the addition of the strap to his bowcaster and the look of the movement in the ankle articulation. I do wish there was more of a transition between the light and dark fur, however. Chewie and Han both are $24.99 and go up for sale at 3PM ET, shipping in the summer.
I was very excited to see that ultra-bizarre alien character Turgle is actually getting a figure. I still haven’t played this game, but watched plenty of Turgle footage online because I’m fascinated by how awesomely awful he is. It is a bit of a bummer that he doesn’t appear to be fully articulated, he deserves elbows and knees too, people! It’s also fun that they included one of the more bizarre cosmetic changes for Cal with the mullet, handlebar mustache combo. This set is already up on Amazon for $44.99 and I ordered him with a quickness.
Related to that is Nightsister Merrin from the Jedi games. I think I would have preferred the red outfit from the first game, but this figure is looking quite nice. I did pick up the PS4 version of the game since I’m not up to date on consoles, so maybe it’s time I played Jedi Survivor. She goes up at 3PM ET for $24.99 and is a mainline release.
Finally, we have one of my more anticipated figures, that I’m kinda shocked I was ever excited for, Dash Rendar. I did not play much of the Shadows of the Empire game, but I had all the toys, read the books and comics, and even had the soundtrack, so I’m nostalgia primed for this oh so ’90s doofus. Honestly I disliked his figure back in the day, but this looks like a good translation of the character except for one thing, his hair seems off to me. I think his portrait would make a great for a great Jamie Lannister figure, but I don’t quite see Dash Rendar there. I think my main point of reference is the figure, but he has been portrayed in all sorts of different ways, but he’s usually got shorter, redder hair. I’m still in, however. I’ll just give him a bit of a rust wash on the hair and I’ll be good. I might give him the gun arm thing from the Bill Burr figure as a reference to his old toy accessory. Would have been nice to get that with this figure. He’s also $24.99 and up for sale today at 3PM ET at the usual spots.
