Hasbro: Marvel Legends Mystique Review

It’s been a while since we got X-Men movie figures and I suppose one advantage of the long wait is that Hasbro has been constantly improving in the intervening years and these new versions of characters from the original X-Men movie benefit greatly from those years of experience. Let’s take a look a Mystique!

The box is a silvery blue and it’s got a big window and an interesting illustration of Mystique in silhouette. I do like the contrast of the yellow insert with Mystique’s vibrant blue.

Mystique comes with two sets of hands (open and fist), and a swappable mid-transformation arm.

The hands have sharp sculpting with nice detail and proportions and a little bit of paint for detail. They swap fairly easily and stay on securely while the arm, you really have to give it a good yank to swap.

The arm is a nice illustration of Mystique’s powers, though I’m not certain if she’s starting or ending the transformation. I’m not sure there are any other accessories that I was dying to get with Mystique, so this is nice to have. Maybe a Jennifer Lawrence head would be nice or a Rebecca Romijin head in regular flesh tones would have worked.

Sculpting on this one is pretty fantastic with tons of that scale detail and excellent proportions. The likeness is quite good, and it’s almost eerily accurate from some angles.

Articulation is about what you expect from Marvel Legends with:

  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, hips, wrists, and ankles
  • Double hinged knees
  • Swivel thighs
  • Ball and socket head and mid-torso

The head has a barbell ball joint in the neck and head so it gets really nice tilt and looking down motion, but looking up is hindered a bit by the hair. The torso wobble gets great wobble, but not much crunch, so she’s a little stiff.

Paint is pretty good with some nice wash in the hair and effective faceprinting for the eyes. I did notice a bit of misalignment for the dark part of the scales on Mystique’s face when I look at the up close photos, but in person it’s a lot less noticeable.

I like the way the blue fades to a darker color on the sides as there are more scales, though the back seems somewhat plain with just the darker color and no lighter blue highlights. That could be accurate for all I know, I haven’t seen the movies in a while and I’m not going to search online for Mystique’s backside.

At right about six inches, I think she’s in decent scale, though she looks little tiny next to Wolverine, but I think that’s more of a Wolverine issue than and Mystique issue. Overall this is great representation of Mystique in figure form and I don’t feel bad that I spent the extra five bucks on it.
