Last week at D23 Disney gave the general public our first official look at footage from the upcoming Disney + show, The Mandalorian. Whenever I see new Star Wars stuff, my mind automatically starts thinking about potential actions figures. Fans saw quite a bit more of The Mandalorian back in April at SWCC, but that footage was not released to the public. I may have seen a copy of the unreleased footage at some point, so that will also inform my top five most wanted Black Series figures from The Mandalorian.
First off, number one and two on my list would most definitely be The Mandalorian himself and Gina Carano’s Cara Dune (a former Rebel Shock Trooper), but both of those have been rumored for the next two waves of the Black Series. If those rumors prove untrue, these two would jump straight to the top of the list. The design for both characters is perfectly toyetic and I especially like that Cara Dune’s costume is actually blue! There are a lot of brown and black/white figures in the Black Series, so I appreciate some color.
My runner up for this list is the as yet unnamed Imperial character played by Werner Herzog. I’m really stoked to see what he brings to this show. If you are familiar with Werner, you probably get it, but if you aren’t this may seem super random. Herzog is a director of some fame and I know him best as the director and narrator of some compelling documentaries. He’s got a great voice and onscreen, the guy has real presence. I can hear what you’re thinking, “it’s an old guy sitting at a desk, what am I so excited about?” Well, this creepy old German guy is also wearing a cool costume with a fur-collared leather jacket and a giant Imperial symbol medallion. It’s the most Dracula looking thing in Star Wars since Count Dooku and I dig it.
5. IG-11
IG-11 almost didn’t make the cut because he’s so similar to IG-88 it hardly seems worth the effort, but there are some differences and the shots with him were some of my favorite in the trailer.
The original Black Series IG-88 felt a little short to me, so I wouldn’t mind a slightly taller new figure, maybe with a little more hip articulation.
4. Moff Gideon
The Mandalorian takes place after the fall of the Empire, but there appears to be Imperial Remnants trying to cling to power in pockets across the Galaxy. Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito, is one such Imperial who happens to have a contingent of Death Troopers at his command. During D23 he was likened to a corrupt Sheriff in an old western and that sounds awesome to me. He looks like he’s wearing a Death Trooper style variant of the General Veers armored look from The Empire Strikes Back complete with a cape and I want a figure of that now.
3. Unnamed Twi’lek
So we don’t know her name yet, but this pink/purple Twi’lek won my heart straight away with that one wink toward camera. It looks like she’s running with a crew of mercenaries or perhaps rival bounty hunters. Whatever it may be, she looks cool and she’s played by an actress I really like, Natalia Tena who played Osha on Game of Thrones and Tonks in the Harry Potter movies. Plus, Twi’leks are just cool.
2. Greef Carga
This is another one where actor choice immediately won me over. Having Carl Weathers in Star Wars is just amazing to me and I can’t wait to see it. He’s playing the head of the Bounty Hunter Guild which in and of itself is exciting to me as an old reader of EU books like Tales of the Bounty Hunters and the Bounty Hunter War series. If they name drop Cradossk, I’ll probably die.
- Kuiil on a Blurgg
Yeah, this is probably just a me thing, but I loved the shot of the Ugnaught Kuiil riding a Blurgg. See, the Blurgg is an old creature that first appeared in the mostly awful, but fondly remembered by me, Battle for Endor TV movie.
They’ve appeared again in Rebels and Clone Wars and the model of Hera Syndulla’s blaster, a gun in Battlefront II is a Blurgg 11-20. There’s even a drink at Galaxy’s Edge called the Blurggfire. I want a Blurgg real bad, guys and a surly looking Ugnaught rider be the icing on that cake.
Well, those are the figures I want to see based on the Trailer. I’m looking forward to the November premiere to see how my initial impressions stack up with the final product. What do you think about The Mandalorian? Want any figures, or just Star Warsed out? Let us know below or on our forums!
