Last week we took a look at the Cyber-Cowboy McCree and today we are continuing are look at Overwatch Ultimates wave two with Zarya! Zarya’s design and colors caught my eye at SDCC, so I was really looking forward to picking this figure up. Let’s take a look!
Zarya comes in the standard Overwatch box with some killer artwork wrapping around the front. I love the design of these characters quite a bit and they appeal to me in the way Street Fighter designs caught my imagination as a kid.
Zarya is a pretty bulky figure, with a large weapon and uses every inch of that plastic tray to hold her particle cannon, blast effect, and extra hands.
The extra hands are fists and the other hands are designed for holding the particle cannon.
Both sets are nicely detailed, though some of that detail is missing paint applications which is definitely looking like standard operating procedures on these figures.
The particle cannon is impressively large and also sharply detailed. I especially like the incorporation of translucent pieces for the glowing energy ball section of the gun.
The decal adds a nice layer of detail as well. In some of the game animations I’ve seen, the white barrel of the gun splits apart a bit more upon firing. It kind of looks like there are hinges where the white barrel pieces connect to the base of the gun to allow that, but it doesn’t work on my figure.
The blast effect plugs into the barrel of the cannon. It can droop a little if you don’t insert it properly. I think it’s a good representation of the weapon’s blast and looks really neat lit up.
The sculpting on this figure is fabulous. They did an amazing job capturing the details and the vibe of the character from the game. I really love how her armor looks like a combination of an old school space suit and a Robotech style mech.
Zarya is a weightlifting champ wearing some massive armor and so she’s appropriately bulky and I also love how pretty the face sculpting is and the way they achieved the very anime giant scar on her face.
Even though Zarya is bulky as heck, the articulation is all pretty functional. She has:
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, wrists, hips and ankles
- Ball and socket mid-torso and head
- Double hinged elbows and knees
- Swivel thighs and biceps
- Single hinged lower torso crunch
I really like how much side tilt Zarya gets with her head and mid torso ball joints. The double knees and elbows get a little more than 90 degree bends, which is very good considering the bulk.
The detents in Zarya’s legs are super tight and tough to move, which normally would annoy me, but I think the solidity of those joints are probably helping her stay standing when balancing the weight of that massive cannon.
The ankles get a surprisingly good range of motion and the side tilts work well to help balance the figure in posing. She does have a pretty large gap in between her crotch and legs so that the large, heavily armored legs can move forward 90 degrees however it doesn’t look as extreme as what we saw on Genji.
Paint is good, but a few detail hits are missing from the armor and the hands. I also have a mistake around the metal neck piece for the suit. The label decals add a nice extra level of cool.
I really like the way the tattoo on her shoulder looks, but my figure doesn’t have the part of her tattoo that’s visible on the forearm. The quality of plastic used for the skin and paint applications on the face work really well together to make Zarya look her best.
Overall, Zarya is really good despite the missing paint details. She’s super fun to pose and has a unique and striking look that just makes me happy to have on the shelf.
