Ever since switching to trades instead of single issues, I have found I get behind on things very easily. It happens. Marvel puts out a ton of titles, and I can’t keep up with everything they do. For instance, did you know that every character was at one point dead, and then miraculously wasn’t dead? One thing I do know is that they have Conan back, and Conan is now in a title with Wolverine and Punisher, and that is nuts.
I’m going to ignore the logistics behind all of that and just focus on the whole Conan thing. That’s the important part. Marvel has the rights to Conan back, which means sexy sexy omnibus collections of his classic comic run, and they can whore him out in whatever manner they wish, even tossing him onto a team with Wolverine. That is inevitable. Everyone ends up on a team with Wolverine. They could get the rights to Ziggy and he’d be on a team with Wolverine within two issues.
Now I want to see that.
Dammit.
With Conan rubbing loincloths with Marvel characters, the biggest question we all need to ask is: how long will it be before we get a Conan figure in Marvel Legends? Sure, Super7 is releasing a classic version based on the early Marvel series, but that’s in a style more suited to MotUC stuff, and this is Marvel Legends I’m talking about.
Conan is an icon, and with Marvel owning the rights to him and wasting no time in cementing him back into the Marvel Universe, you have to assume that we will be getting some kind of Conan in Marvel Legends, right? I’m not entirely sure how the merchandising rights work out here.
That’s for other people and other people’s lawyers to worry about. All I care about is getting a Marvel Legends Conan. That Legendary Heroes Conan was a decent figure for its time, but its time is over a decade old now (holy shit that is a long time…), and toys have come a long way since then. Toys have come a loooooong way. I look at the new Hercules figure and I can see how that could become a Conan figure with some new legs and some additional bits. It’s gotta be the big burly chest.
The original Conan series ran for a huge 275 issues. Not content to keep to a single title, Conan also found himself in titles like Savage Sword of Conan, King Conan and Conan goes to the Park. That last one might not be true, but Conan was a big part of Marvel back in the 70s and 80s, and Marvel getting the rights to plop him into their comics is kind of a big deal. Even more of a big deal is teaming him up with Wolverine and Punisher. That is one grumpy trifecta. I hear they spent a half hour of their first meeting trying to out-scowl each other. Then they braided each others hair.
I’m not sure how a Conan figure would be released. Since he’s a Savage Avenger right now, so maybe they could release him in an Avenger wave, if we’re going to be having more Avenger waves. Or he could be one of those fan channel things. Sometimes I want to change the fan channel, because there’s nothing but reruns on, but I’d make an exception for Conan. Conan actually seems like he’d be a good Walgreens release, for no particular reason other than he’d be easier to get than if he were a Wal-mart release, which causes much gnashing of teeth and shaking of fist. So Wal-mart exclusives turn us all into Cimmerians, apparently.
I’m not here to predict the avenue in which he’d come out, though. I’m just here to state plainly in a manner that we all can understand that I want a modern Conan figure in Marvel Legends. Stick him wherever you need to stick him, but hurry up before the rights switch again.
It’s what is best in life.
