Can of Beams: Telepathy Effect Review

Can of Beams
Telepathy Effect

You how when you didn’t know you needed a thing, but then you see the thing and then you cannot live without the thing. Yeah.

So, the Marvel Legends Professor X with Hover Chair is currently sitting high on my list of favorite Legends releases ever. The fact that it was a long time coming aside, just about everything with this release is pretty dead-on perfect for me. Chuck was captured in expressive form and in a look that can bridge various eras, and his very era-specific chair has so much detail and provides a great form on the shelf. I was completely content with this set.

Then, like they often do, Can of Beams came along and made me realize that I simply could not do without their decidedly superior “telepathy effect” alternative. I have to admit, I was not fussed with the official effect piece that attaches to the back of the Cerebro helmet. Sure, it is an interesting choice, but I suppose realizing what telepathy looks like in a plastic form can be challenging. In the the end though, the official release looks like liquid more than anything, so I will say that it looks like pearlescent milk(?) and leave it at that. Please leave it at that.

So, when Can of Beams debuted this alternative, I did not hesitate, and I picked up the effect in both blue and pink, and friends, I love ’em. Like, a LOT. This is not my first turn with CoB, and I have been a very happy customer with every purchase, so don’t be surprised that this is much the same. The thing with Can of Beams releases is that they make so much sense, the concepts seem simple, even though they are certainly not. Plus, everything it executed so well and at such a reasonable value, it makes stuff like this impossible to pass up.

In the end, this effect is cut on flat, crystal clear plastic/resin and painted with a blue (or pink) gradient with white, and man, it looks so nice. CoB offers much more elaborate pieces, but the ovals that expand out from the center (that can be affixed via the provided blu-tak) positioned on the back of the head/helmet just looks perfect. It is like expanding thought as it would really be portrayed in a comic book. I prefer the blue version for Chuck, but since I ordered both, the pink works great for Jean, in my opinion.

Regardless, you can’t go wrong with either, and while I know I limited the pics in the feature to those two, there are so many options for various effects these can create with just a touch creativity. Like I said, I was fine with the factory piece, but now, these two will be permanent staples of my display. I don’t know, these just seem much more logical in the design of the telepathy powers, and these are crisp and so precise, so they are almost the antithesis of the official versions. So, maybe there is a place for all of them, depending on the scenario you want to create.

So yeah, these rule, and the best part is that, even though they are sold out now (Can of Beams sales are usually on Fridays), they look to be being brought back a few times, so don’t sleep on them at all, you will regret it. I love this stuff, and I cannot wait to see what they cook up next.
