Toy Fair ’19: Mezco Reactions

You knew it was going to be a big showing. We all knew it. But man…

As the toy show essentially held in their backyard, Mezco always seems to bring the heat to Toy Fair. And that was certainly the case this week. There were some last looks at figures that will be hitting doorsteps in the next few weeks, a ton of stuff to carry us through this year, and some truly tantalising peeks at 2020.

Let’s just get this one out of the way: Keaton Batman is coming. All the doubts, the complaining, it’s all good now. He is coming. And he is going to outclass every other small scale version we’ve ever had. I really don’t have nuch to say, seeing as I kept the faith. I knew this day would come. And it’s gonna be worth it.

The Marvel universe got a boost with a Toy Fair exclusive version of Blade, with the regular one not far off, better looks at Black Bolt and Magneto, and some other coming soons like Logan and Cable. Ghost Rider is still just looking bad as hell. It’s just fun to see them chugging along. I have to point out one concern at the Marvel stable, though- the Netflix Daredevil and Punisher, while thankfully still inbound, don’t seem as sharp as they have inshowings past– particularly Punisher’s vest and Daredevil’s suit. I’m not too concerned about the final product, but this was still kinda odd, considering how soon these are supposed to be shipping. Old protoypes, maybe? Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see.

As with last year, Mezco teased us going into the show with a silhouette showing of things they would be debuting. Unlike last year though, we kinda had these pegged going in. Captain Marvel was a no brainer, hell, she got a full teaser even before the show started, and it’s a good looking figure with a pretty great likeness. Pennywise makes such sense for this line, and despite never liking that creepy clown bastard, I’ll have to get one. Hellboy? Awesome. Kind of a return to their roots, though this one is based on the new film. And while I’m not yet sure about that film yet, I have no reservations about the figure form. Comic Harley is shaping up to be a fantastic real-world take on her classic animated design, and comic Wonder Woman is truly jaw-dropping. My only concern there is that I hope the female body has seen continued improvement- it looks like single knees on Wonder Woman, but it is at least a new style of joint, from what I can tell. There was also this bug guy, got the internet all worked up…

But Mezco did keep some surprises for the show, they were just all in the catalog. There is a lot of awesome stuff in here that we’ll obviously get to talk about more as we know more, but just out the gate, here’s some takeaways:

  1. Apperently I’m now a Moon Knight fan.
  2. Aquaman is outrageous.
  3. Taco Supreme Batman is gonna be amazing. Just you wait.
  4. Gambit??? Am I really going to build a Mezco X-Men team???
  5. Removeable armor on Aquaman and Wonder Woman is super cool.
  6. Keaton Batman is a game changer. All I need now is an unmasked head. Maybe with a Returns suit?

That’s plenty to chew on for now i would say. Special thanks to Robo for the in-show shots, and my buddy MadeForRobots for these catalog shots we can now pout over in detail.
