One of the fun things for me at SDCC is hitting the dealer booths to look for figures that haven’t hit the local stores yet. This year I found the Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years two-packs of Ant-Man and Yellowjacket and Thor and Sif. Let’s take a look at Ant-Man and Yellowjacket!
I thought the original Ant-Man figure from Marvel Legends was really nice, but I was disappointed that his mask was stuck in the open position, so I was glad to see this re-do released along with one of the most visually striking villains, Yellowjacket.
The set comes with the Yellowjacket and Ant-Man figures, two miniature versions of both characters, an extra Scott Lang head sculpt, and a removeable backpack for Yellowjacket.
The tiny Yellowjacket and Ant-Man appear to be re-releases of the miniature versions from the Ultron wave Ant-Man.
They aren’t flashy and have very little detail or paint, but are fun to have and I’m glad because I can’t find my originals.
The extra head is nice and features a good likeness and effective face-printing. The ball socket is designed to fit the neck of the original Ant-Man figure, so it doesn’t swap well with the Ant-Man and the Wasp version. The socket is a little small to fit on the new body easily.
The funny face from the new version will sit loosely on the old body, but you can set it on there.
The sculpt is nice and appears to be re-use from the original, but it’s painted a little more cleanly.
Yellowjacket is pretty fantastic and has a lot of technical suit details. The head has some translucent yellow goggles and a really sharp detail sculpt.
The backpack is removeable and the arms are articulated. The backpack is a little loose and will sometimes fall off while posing. The lower arms have three points of articulation (two swivel/hinges and a single hinge) and the upper arms (antennae?) are on a swivel/hinge.
The articulation is Marvel Legends standard, but the swivel/hinge at the ankle features a floating hinge joint so it swivels at the connection to the ankle and the foot. The figures moves really well, but the ab crunch does not have a lot of forward movement.
The paint is fairly simple, not a lot of washes or shading, but it’s all effective and the detail is pretty sharp.
Overall, I like this pack quite a bit. The re-use does not bother me because they improved on the original figure quite a bit. It’s so nice to finally get the villain from this film. Hopefully I won’t have to wait this long to get Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp.
