At times it felt like every week I was getting a new WWE figure with the amount of product Mattel cranked out this year. There were a lot of strong figures to choose from with the Elite Enzo Amore, Isaac Yankem DDS and the long overdue D-Lo Brown. But for me, my top choice was easy — the Defining Moments Macho Man Randy Savage.
Mattel has been releasing Macho Man figures almost since the start of their acquisition of the license. We’ve gotten the ’90s rodeo cowboy version, the numerous WCW incarnations, and even an Ultimate Maniacs Macho Man. But it took until 2017 to get a legit definitive Macho Man in all of his 1987 glory. This was one of those welcome instances where the figure was worth the wait.
It’s all about the incredible cloth robe. None of that ridiculous hard plastic here. This is a swank robe and looks appropriately eye catching, even on the ’80s-era shelf in my collection. Macho Man gets the full quality treatment complete with shimmery material and furry edges. We’ve gotten several ’80s-era Macho Man figures, but this was the first with the robe. It was important Mattel got that right and they did.
In a rare move for Mattel, Macho Man gets a new head sculpt, which I liked a lot as it captures more of his intensity. Mattel likely won’t stop cranking out Macho Man figures, but thanks to this figure I might not need another one.
