The Legendary Super Saiyan Broly makes his debut in the Bandai Figure-rise Standard line!
The model kit line offers a nice, cheap alternative to the S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball line, and it also tickles the fancy of those who like building models. It’s not really a competition. Options are good. Both lines appeal to different collectors.
I only type all of that because any time I comment on how the models are my line of choice when it comes to Dragon Ball, it’s inevitably followed by “The SHF line is better.” I’m sure it is. Especially when it comes to traditional action figures. That’s perfectly fine, nothing wrong with that. You do you.
But the Figure-rise line gets vehicles. Neeners. And now a Broly that doesn’t cost $150+. Double neeners.
First up, this looks to be a big honkin’ model. The Super Saiyan Goku is a standard Marvel Legends height and Broly seems quite a bit taller and thicker. I say “seems to be” because the shot with Goku is a bit wonky. He doesn’t look big big, but then he’s also in the background a bit. The pic with SS Vegeta makes him looks super huge, but he’s most definitely in the foreground. So I’ll hold off making any height assumptions until it releases.
But it is big. In general.
It’s also awesome that the kit includes new “takin’ pain” faces for both Vegeta and Goku. Broly also gets a couple of hand options and two faces.
The promo shots look rough, like it was painted in a hurry. The final model won’t have any of that painted detail unless you do it yourself so I’m not too worried about that aspect.
I’m not sure what’s going on with the back or why it’s prominently pictured, but it looks like it’s going to break up fairly bad when the arms are shunted forward. Most of the kits have butterfly shoulders, I guess with the bulk involved here things were going to get wonky.
Broly is now up for pre-order from the usual shops for about $35 with a release date of January. I say it every time but I love how down to business this line seems. Show some teases, solicit, release in a couple of months. Rinse. Repeat.
