As spoiled as we were, if there was any one thing that the Mezco Dark Knight Returns Batman needed to include but didn’t, it was most definitely an unmasked head.
Okay, an unmasked head and a Bat-Tank, Carrie Kelley, Superman, and the Armored Suit.
Seriously though, I had in some ways forgotten what an impressive figure the DKR Batman truly is, and there is no better reminder of that than getting something like Drone’s custom Bruce Wayne head to remind me.
An unenviable task to be sure, Drone took on the challenge of matching the distinctive Mezco masked Baman head, itself based on the surprisingly tough to interpret Frank Miller art, and crafted an unmasked one that looks like it came out of the same vein.
Personally, I think he nailed it.
The painted head is the way to go, no doubt about it. I think he did a damn good job of matching that very tough pallid color of the original figure, and then was able to bring out that sculpted detail in such a fashion you could convince the unknowing it was a factory piece. In fact, it fits very nicely in tone between the original heads, and the ones YouTube Sensation RoboKillah painted up for me.
The fit is surprisingly tight, and despite being a casted sculpt (as opposed to the PVC of the factory), the paint and build feel solid. I had no trouble popping it off and on between Batmen, with maybe just a little more patience. Paired up with the old DC Direct Secret Origins mask piece, there is a fantastic brooding, almost regal, quality to the figure that really came out when playing with it.
So, if you think you’re going to need one as well, shout him out at DroneCustomFigs@gmail, /Drone Customs on Facebook, or you can probably catch him here on the boards. Might be wise to follow him as well; he’s got some other exciting stuff in progress for One:12 figures …
