Four Horsemen Studios: Mythic Legions Baron Volligar

Ever pass on a figure at pre-order and regret it later? Well that’s what happened to me with Baron Volligar from Mythic Legions: Covenant of Shadows. He didn’t fit my preconceived notion of what a Mythic Legions Black Knight should be, so I passed. It wasn’t until I started seeing release photos that I figured out what should have been obvious from the start, that Baron Volligar is a Vampire Knight and part of my favorite Mythic Legions faction and I screwed up big time. I paid the price for my foolishness by paying literal aftermarket prices, so let’s take a look at Baron Volligar!

I wonder if Vampire Knights can withstand sunlight since they are covered head to toe. Hmm …

Carpathias the Vampire was one of my favorite Mythic Legions figures from series one, and I love all the new knights and female vamps introduced in the series 2 kickstarter. I ordered all the vamps from Mythic Legions 2.0, so I felt even more compelled to buy Baron Volligar to complete my set.

Fortunately, I had some Paypal money burning a hole in my pocket so I didn’t feel too bad dropping the extra money on an aftermarket figure from BBTS.com.

He looks fantastic with Carpathias. He’s got the heavier, orc-style armor pieces mixed in with the tabard body type and it makes for an imposing silhouette. The dragon helm topper also adds to the cool silhouette factor.

In my defense, you can see from the box art that the purple wasn’t quite lining up with the established Mythic Legions Vampire color scheme at pre-order time.

Another thing I noticed is that the 4H dropped the glowing red eyes for this figure. I didn’t really miss them until writing this up, so I’m okay with it.

Baron Volligar comes with some common accessories by way of the standard broadsword and shield. The shield has a nice repeat of his tabard symbol. The figure also has removable shoulder pads and a sword belt.

He also comes with a really cool standard. As a lord, I don’t think he should be holding it, but I’ll definitely add it to one of my Vampire soldiers once Mythic Legions 2 comes out.

You can kind of pin the standard in between his shoulder pads for a tripod effect. It’s also nice that the top of the standard has a design featuring the dragon wings from the helmets. They can be popped and swapped with other similar horn/antler pieces.

The paint on Volligar is pretty cool with a nice combo of steel metallic paint and a flat black. I also like that the crest of the helm has a nice metallic purple finish.

The articulation is Mythic Legion Standard with the following points:

  • Ball/socket head and torso
  • Swivel/Hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles
  • Swivel neck, wrists, and hips

The figure moves well, extremely well considering the bulk and shape of the armor pieces. These figures are very nicely engineered in terms of articulation and balance, easily holding a multitude of poses. I do wish they had included the free floating hinge joint in the wrist that they did in the ankles so that they could hold the sword in different poses.

I had heard of some looseness in the Covenant of Shadows figures, so I was pleased to see that my figure is nice and tight.

Ultimately, I don’t feel too horrible having paid a premium for this figure as it’s really solid, playable, and a great add to my Vampire faction. I just wish I had been smart enough to order it timely in the first place.
