I’m a big fan of the 6-inch scale Star Wars Black Series figures, but even I recognize that the paint jobs often fail the sculpts, especially on the human characters. I’ve recently been enjoying the Black Series repaints and customs created by Oldboy CTTS. The new paint makes these sculpts pop like they just walked off the screen. Recently Oldbody CTTS offered a custom kit for one of my favorite characters, Count Dooku, so I had to pick one up. Let’s take a look.
The kit includes a fully painted head sculpt and a cloth cape with a metal chain.
The head sculpt is really sharp and does a great job representing Christopher Lee. It’s designed to go on top of a The Force Awakens General Hux figure.
The cape has the right shape and the clasp chain, and while not wholly film-accurate, works nicely. The cape is also missing a bit of quilting detail around the shoulders, but at this scale I can forgive that.
Now, if you know Dooku, the Hux body is not completely film-accurate as a Count Dooku costume. A little more work is required to sculpt the collar and belt to make his costume film-accurate if you wish, but I think it’s passable as just another outfit.
The paint work is very subtle and is used to highlight the sculpt, especially lightening the areas around the cheek bones. It’s very lifelike and the eyebrows have the right amount of “crazy.”
I think he ends up a little shorter than Dooku should be in relative scale, so when I go in and make my custom adjustments to the base body, I’ll be looking for a way to add a little height. I’ll also need to figure out a lightsaber for him.
The set is pretty pricey at $50, but it is custom work and I wanted a Count Dooku figure badly, so it was worth it to me. Oldboy CTTS has sold out of this set, but there has been mention of a re-release and some other interesting projects for the Black Series, so follow Oldboy CTTS on Facebook for more information.
