Hasbro was kind enough to let us know that they won’t be showing off any new items from the upcoming Rogue One at Toy Fair. Hopefully we will see some new items not related to that film on display this weekend for the 6-inch line. Here’s my top ten Original Trilogy characters I’d like to see:
Runners Up
Redo the main characters
Of course I want an Endor Han, Luke and Leia and a Bespin Han, Hoth Leia, etc., etc., but not as much as I want new characters. Besides Episode IV Leia WIP sculpt has been shown and an old wizard version of Ben Kenobi is a popular rumor.
Troopers, Pilots and Soldiers
I’d love some Rebel Troops from Hoth and Endor, and to finish up my Stormtrooper variants with the Snow Trooper and AT-AT pilot. These seem especially relevant in light of the troop-focused Battlefront game. We have heard rumors that the Snow Trooper and AT-AT will be released soon, so I focused on other characters. I’d also love Biggs, Hobbie, Dak, and Porkins figures, but I can’t quite pick one that stands out ahead of the others.
10. Bib Fortuna
Jabba’s main flunky needs representation. Bib has this great pale, almost vampiric look that I think would look fantastic blown up in the 6-inch scale. I love Twi’leks in general, so I’d enjoy seeing the first one get a good figure. Bib Fortuna would really complete the whole Jabba’s throne scene for me if I could add him standing behind Jabba.
9. Lobot
What Bib Fortuna is to Jabba, Lobot is to Lando. Lobot gets a boost just because of how much I love the scoundrel Calrissian. The recent Lando comic book showed Lobot and Lando as partners in many ventures prior to conning somebody out of Cloud City. That comic actually has some unexpectedly poignant scenes between Lando and Lobot that makes me want a figure of this guy even more.
8. Wedge Antilles
A man of few words, but he managed to last through the fighter battles of all three movies, head up one of my favorite Star Wars EU series, and assist in the destruction of two Death Stars. Wedge stands out amongst his pilot brethren as significant.
7. Zuckuss
Have I mentioned that I love bounty hunters? Well, I do and that love started back with the original Kenner Bounty Hunter figures. Zuckuss and 4-LOM were name-swapped in some of the original ancillary materials that named them, so to this day I have a hard time remembering which is which. As a kid, I really enjoyed Zuckuss’s removable soft-good cloak. It was such a weird material and was shared by many figures across the line. The Gand Findsman has a great bio-technical look that is screaming for a larger canvass to show off all the detail on that mask.
6. 4-LOM
For some reason I always paired up Zuckuss and 4-LOM as a team as a kid, which is kind of interesting because they were paired this way in the expanded universe years later. I suppose they both have a very insectoid look to them, and I could see 4-LOM as being a droid from Zuckuss’s world. I don’t know his origin in the new canon, but he was basically a protocol droid turned to evil. Hasbro has this figure halfway made with the upcoming C-3PO figure, so I feel like he’s a lock.
5. Gamorrean Guard
These drooling pig-monsters almost have a Masters of the Universe feel to them with their armored chest plates and furry underwear. Jabba certainly needs some back up as he’s pretty lonely right now, and a few of these guys would do the trick. The 3 3/4-inch line made an amazing Gamorrean figure recently, so I know Hasbro can get it done right, and these guys could be incredibly toyetic if done right.
4. Dengar
Dengar is the “used universe” concept of Star Wars design personified. His armor is a hodge podge of armor from different imperials and costume parts from Hoth Rebels. His battered face makes it so you aren’t sure if his head is bandaged or if he’s wearing a turban of some sort. As a kid, Dengar got a lot of play because his backpack had so much detail in it, I could imagine it having all sorts of cool functionality. It’s not just about completing the bounty hunter set for me with Dengar; he just looks like a hard as nails bounty killer.
3. Nien Nunb
Nien serves as Lando’s co-pilot at the battle of Endor and is a perfectly odd and unique alien design. I can’t get enough of the guy’s laugh. His role in the rebellion has recently been expanded in the new canon where he’s shown up a couple times in his own smuggling ship, the Mellcrawler.
2. Grand Moff Tarkin
We just recently got a General Hux figure from The Force Awakens and as much as I like him, it really just made me want a Tarkin figure. I don’t think I need to justify the importance of Tarkin to the Star Wars Saga, but since he’s not super toyetic, he doesn’t seem to get figures as much as the other big bad guys.
1. Lando Calrissian
Lando’s not a system, he’s a man. Lando Calrissian. He’s a card player, gambler, scoundrel. You’d like a 6-inch scale figure of him. Lando is arguably the biggest character in Star Wars to not have figure representation in this line yet. I’d prefer the Cloud City costume with an alternate schmoozing-smile head sculpt.
