DC Collectibles: CW’s The Flash

review dc collectibles the flash flash 6

You know you’ve finally “made it” when you’ve been immortalized in plastic.  And it looks like CW’s Grant Gustin should consider hisself “made” with DC Collectibles new The Flash figure making its way to store pegs.

Sculpted by the folks at Gentle Giant Studios, the production figure of Gustin’s Flash (shown off at Toy Fair 2015), seemed much more impressive than how the figure actually turned out.  He just isn’t as… dynamic as expected?  Or, as dynamic as an inanimate piece of plastic can be, I suppose.  The figure just comes off a little… bland.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty faithful representation of The Flash’s Barry Allen/Grant Gustin.  The figure’s suit is a spot-on reproduction of the show’s costume.  It’s textured along the arms and legs and has the yellow lightning bolt running down the sides as well.  The color of the figure’s suit is fairly accurate, as is the detailing of the trademark lightning bolts on his chest and the sides of his head.

The Flash is as articulate as you’d expect him to be.  He’s got the double-hinged knee joints and multiple pivot joints in both his arms and legs.  His feet aren’t completely flat, making him a bit difficult to pose unsupported.  But, between the pivot point at the top of his boots and the hinge joint at the ankle, you can eventually get him to stand on his own.

Eventually.

He also comes with three sets of hands:  a set of fists, a set of slightly opened hands, and the last set completely open (in case you want your Barry to look like he’s gonna bust through the time barrier).  This is one of those times, though, I might’ve liked a stand over the extra hands.  This way he’d been much easier to put into a running-type pose than he is.

On the down side, the figure I picked up seems to be a little cross-eyed.  Luck of the draw for me, perhaps.  It was the only one my local comic shop had in stock.  Combined with the expression on his face (or the lack of expression), the figure’s just kinda… bland.

Your friendly neighborhood jman’s a big believer in opening your toys, but, unfortunately, this is one figure that’s a bit more impressive in the packaging.  He’s in stores now and retails for $24.99.  If you get him, let me know what you think in the comments below.
