Hasbro: Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels_01I picked up the recently released Rebels Tie Fighter Pilot, AT-DP Driver, Troop Transport and Wookie Two-Pack and felt like it was a good time to take pics of my Rebels collection so far. Let’s take a closer look at Hasbro’s 3 and 3/4 scale Rebels line!

Star Wars Rebels_02.5The above pic shows my Rebels collection so far. I have almost everything that’s been released, however I’m still missing the two packs with smuggler Citrako Visago and his droid as well as the Sabine Wren/ Stormtrooper pack. The other main Rebels character that’s pending release is a two pack with rebel leader Hera Syndulla.

The Wookie two-pack features two background Wookies that the Rebel crew assisted in the series premier. They are highly stylized as befits their cartoonish design. The paint is also really simplistic with a very messy dry brush on the fur. I like how the thinner Wookie is almost smiling and bigger Wookie has a significantly larger build. It’s a nice size variety. The odd thing is there are no weapons. I know they didn’t use any in the episode, but a bowcaster or two would have been nice.

The AT-DP driver comes with a standard imperial blaster. He fits snugly into the AT-DP and can stand in the open hatch of the AT-DP, though it does make the smaller scale of the vehicle more apparent. The paint on this guy is pretty nice, if simple, the highlight being the tampo’d smybols on the helmet.

The troop transport is a fun vehicle for me because it’s one that was never in the films, but was a Kenner toy. It featured in a lot of playtime adventures when I was a kid, so it’s a kick to see it so prominently featured in Rebels.

Star Wars Rebels_35Like the vintage toy, the vehicle is a little small. In the show it’s quite a bit larger, but sizing down vehicles has long been standard procedure over the years from Kenner through Hasbro so it’s not exactly surprising.

Although the box art front is a little misleading regarding the size of this vehicle. There were a bunch of tiny decals on this vehicle, so you may want to grab some tweezers when you crack it open. There are some studs at the bottom of the Troop Transport that lends a floating look to the vehicle that I wish were wheels, but it’s a cool effect.

The Transport does carry a lot of troops with 6 slots outside and three pilot seats inside. It’s nice to see that Hasbro sculpted some interior techno details for the cockpit and the inside of the roof.

The Transport has a rotating cannon up top and two swiveling laser cannons at the front. The top cannon has your standard spring loaded missiles for eye-putting-out playtime fun. The paint is pretty minimal and all the panel detail just screams for a wash to me.

The Tie Pilot has the slightly stylized Rebels look and comes with the standard Imperial blaster. The paint is nice with a glossy finish where it’s needed. Rebels actually puts Tie Fighter pilots into the action in and outside of their Ties quite a bit, so it’s cool to see them in this style, though a removeable helmet or alternate head would have been nice.

He looks cool in the inquisitor’s Tie, though playing with these figures today made me want a Rebels style regular Tie Fighter for Sabine to blow up and or repaint.

Star Wars Rebels_48I was a Star Wars kid growing up in the Kenner era, so these figures are a real throwback for me in a few ways. The 5 POA standard articulation is something that would normally keep me from buying figures because I’m usually into more articulated 6-inch scaled figures, but I just love the show so much that I felt compelled to get these guys.

The line started out slowly with the three-pack of Ezra, Kanan and a hologram of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The stylized nature of character designs help me accept the simpler articulation scheme. I kind of like the graphic simplicity of these figures on the shelf.

Star Wars Rebels_49 Star Wars Rebels_50That said, I would love some 6 inch scale realistic versions of all of these characters in the Black Series.

Hopefully these figures will also get a little easier to find, though it’s kind of sad that the season of Rebels has ended and you can’t get two of the main cast members (Hera and Sabine) in toy form.
