Hasbro: Marvel Legends Zola Series Daken

Hasbro Marvel Legends Arnim Zola Series Daken featured

In the wake of The Death of Wolverine event that is going on in Marvel Comics, it’s time to take a look at one his possible successors, Daken, at least until they bring Wolverine back to life. And, let’s face it, that melted statue of Logan has MacGuffin written all over it. I think MacGuffin is the right expression. It’s, like, going to bring him back to life or he’s going to heal or something is gonna happen with that stupid statue. Until then, we have to figure out who takes over.

And that leads us to Daken, a long lost son of Wolverine, who inherits his powers, was abducted by Winter Soldier, and was raised to hate Wolverine. Then there is a lot of drama: Daken becomes part of the Avengers and X-Men and then is killed — by Wolverine — in a twisted plot all set up by Sabertooth, caught on tape, as blackmail. The Apocalypse Twins bring him back to life to torment his father. He’s now freely roaming the Marvel Universe and is no doubt one of the heirs to the Wolverine throne, though he might have to fight his dad’s teenage female clone.

BTW, this is, like, the most emotionally unstable family ever.

Daken’s Marvel Legends action figure appeared in the Arnim Zola Series and was built on the Quicksilver base. He got some new parts, but not many, and is painted in the brown ’80s Wolverine costume. The new parts, like his hands, head, and shins are OK, nothing great or exceptional. I like the look of the head and think that it pops. I’m not certain how well the head scales, but I might like it better on the Black Panther base. Daken is listed as larger than Wolverine, and getting him on a larger, more muscular base might work wonders. I’ll have to check the head size and see if it needs a scaling up. I’ve decided the finned boots just don’t cut the mustard in these modern times, no problem with the costume colors and design, but those finned boots have got to go. Maybe just “paint” the fins on.

The articulation on the figure is standard for Marvel Legends and there isn’t anything new to cover in that regard. It is what it is. This base figure uses the 45-degree hip mounts that splits the Marvel Legends collector base.

I forgot to the mention the belt. It’s new piece that look OK on this figure. I’d like to boil it off and put it on “Giant Sized” Cyclops custom that I have in mind. I don’t know how the belt will fit since it seems narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.

The paint application is good. All Hasbro had to do was copy the previous Toy Biz Series 6 paint apps and they were golden. The tattoos on the arm are new and well done, not that I think the tattoos are cool, but the paint application is well done. And, yeah, Daken is modern, but arm sock tattoos don’t look cool on skinny guys. No.

Don’t forget, there’s also a version of Daken also comes without his mask. Benty covered that figure way back when, and you can read more about it here.

For those of you uncertain as to whether or not you should be collecting this figure, you should. Daken is about to play a central role in the Marvel Universe in the wake of Wolverine’s death. That is, until Marvel follows up on my recommendation and crisises the whole universe.
