Figma – The Avengers: Captain America

I’ve been so excited about the Figma Avengers action figures that I’m easily disappointed by them once I get them in my hands. The fault is mine; I have huge expectations about these figures being 6-inch scaled, on the plus side, and they are not. Figma did not lie to us; the first pics they showed off clearly gave an indication of the scale of the figures. But I’m a sucker for hope.

Cap is tiny, he’s not even 6 inches tall, which is disappointing. Chris Evans is listed as 6 feet tall, and you would think after nailing Chris Hemsworth’s Thor that they would nail Evans as well. Sadly, this is not the case. Cap is clearly under 6 inches and you would expect a little more height with the boots. But this is not the case, and, as result, I’m disappointed. I can’t figure what’s wrong — the legs look long enough; I think it’s just the upper body that is short. Even the arms look short. Even with the whole “anime” look they still look short.

Which kills me. I love the sculpt of this figure. Yeah, he’s got this thin rubber covering for his pecs to allow the most range of motion, but I love it! I love the look of these figures. They look great with my S.H. Figuarts and other Figma action figures. In fact, I think Cap is one of the better sculpts on my Figma shelf right now. I know there’s been a lot of complaining about the head sculpt, but I’m liking it. The size, the shape — it pops. Granted, if you scale up the upper body a bit, you’ll have to do the same to head.

The articulation is standard, straight out-of-the-box Figma. They have their joint system, and despite the clunky look sometimes, it works. I thought the choices of joint sizes worked better this time around for Cap than it did for Thor (those elbows!), except for the ankles. Cap’s got big joints down there, and combined with the sculpt, the rocker ankle doesn’t have that much space to move around. You’ll also notice, in some of the pictures, his ab is off, skewed to the right (picture left). I don’t know if it is molding or what, but I can’t get the joint straight. I’ve had this problem before with Figma figures and I think the solution is to zap the parts under a hair dryer for a while.

The accessories are awesome. I love the shield. It is the best Cap shield on the market today. There’s a ton of fun to have with it. As usual, there are a plethora of hands. I love the hands with the fingers spread out; there is something very “Kirby” in them. The pointing finger hand is great for making Cap point, and luckily his arm articulation prevents him from picking his nose, but I’m certain this figure will get put to good use.

It may sound like I’m being tough on the figure. It’s not so much the figure as it is my own expectations about scale. I have this strong desire for everything to fit with my Marvel Legends or DC Universe Classics collections. But it’s an unreasonable expectation. Instead, I should be focusing on the positives, like this is a great action figure and it makes a mediocre movie costume look really good.
