Mattel DC Infinite Earths Damian Wayne Early Look

DSC_0008_zps88987b8c

Greetings, everyone. We have an early look at the upcoming DC Infinite Earths Damian Wayne figure courtesy of frequent Fwoosher Lestat. He’s given us some impressions and pictures, so let’s jump right into Lestat’s review.

I will admit off the bat that I paid way too much for this guy. I got him early from a Chinese seller on eBay because I HAD to have him. I have no regrets, though; he is one of my favorite DC characters and there was no way I was going to wait. So you guys get to benefit from the fruits of my foolishness with this “First Look.”

Sculpt/Paint

The best part of this figure is his head sculpt: it perfectly captures Damian. He has that smug look of a 10-year-old that was raised by supervillains, can kick anyone’s ass, and happens to be Batman’s son. You can’t really blame the kid for being kind of cocky when he can back it up, right? The Four Horsemen’s face sculpts in DCUC have always been hit or miss for me. Some tend to have this blandness that is really unfortunate given the Horsemen’s collective talent. They knocked this one out of the park, though. Damian also gets new gloves with bat scallops, new boots, and a really fantastic-looking cape.

I love the wrinkles in his boots and his armored gloves. Mattel could have really cheaped out on these, but they went the extra mile. I would have liked to have seen a raised “R” symbol, though. That notwithstanding, the symbol looks very sharp and clean. The paint is good with the exception of some small black marks on Damian’s face.

Articulation

Sigh… This is where Mattel decided to be Mattel and not give Damian double knees and elbows.

COME ON MATTEL!!! You give Blue Beetle double joints and not BATMAN’S SON (or Batman for that matter)?!?!?!? Short rant ended. Really, it’s almost forgivable. But only because it is a shortsightedness that I’ve come to expect from Mattel.

Accessories

He comes with what can only be described as a brass-knuckle Batarang. Robin-Rang? Rob-O-Rang? In any event, it’s weird. I don’t know how he would use the thing without hurting his hand. If I had to guess, this is a send up to the first time Damian goes to Wayne Manor. He tries to fight Batman and Bruce makes a comment about Damian not being as good as he thinks he is if he has to use brass knuckles. Gotta love Batman’s ability to own you with words.

Despite his admittedly minor flaws, this is a great figure of Damian Wayne. In my opinion, he is easily the best figure we have had of this character. I’m sure DCC has one in the works, but for now the Mattel version is the reigning champion.

There you have it, folks. Big thanks to Lestat for sharing his thoughts on this figure. He will be available soonish on Matty’s website.
