One of my Facebook friends posted this today and holy crap I am both mesmerized, creeped out and scared as hell. This isn’t breaking news stuff, Mirai Suenaga is character and project that’s been around since 2007. But I’m not always up to date on the latest and greatest and I thank my facebook feed for dropping items like this on a slow Monday Morning.
Let me explain mesmerized, creeped and scared. I love robotics and the concept behind them, robots, androids, etc are major themes in the science fiction of my youth and when I see that people are actively trying to make humanoid robots I get very excited. Personally I’d rather see more time and money invested in pilotable mechs, but little robot humanoids are also cool.
And yet they are creepy as hell. Take this as a prime example, a female doll that can be dressed up and down, standing about 2 feet tall at that. The creepy factor is that this is a female doll and I know that the next step is taking a real doll and making her robotic, and no I’m not the only person in the world that just thought that. There are some creepy people out there.
The scary part is that, well this is a robot. Yeah yoy have to control it through your android phone and there is software and stuff, but how far away is the Ghost in the Shell in that regard? How long before Skynet becomes self aware? Before the Matrix takes over? Before your robot doll decides she wants independence and kills you in your sleep? As much as I love robotics and the concept and, even more the concept of artificial intelligence, the idea that we might be able to evolve a machine to the level scares the hell out of me.
All that aside, this thing looks absolutely amazing and my hats off to Danny Choo for taking the time and making a robotic doll. Its an ambitious project and the current product looks amazing. I don’t know what the market for 60cm dolls is, but I do know that if some one could do turn my six inch Marvel Legends collection into little robots that I could control and have Battle Royales, then I would be a happy camper.
