LEGO – Cuusoo: The Delorean Time Machine 21103

In this week’s LEGO review I will be checking out a LEGO Cuusoo product. This set is the 4th in the Cuusoo line. The Cuusoo sets are submitted by the fans and voted on by LEGO fans. Once a product gets 10,000 votes, it is submitted to be reviewed by LEGO and its designers. Not every set that gets enough votes gets made, so it has to be a very special set to “win,” so, lucky for us, this set won!

This set is based on the Delorean seen in all three Back to the Future movies. Once you have the base car built, you have the Delorean from the first movie. And with just a few part swaps you can either make the car from part 2 or 3 and back again within seconds. There are also two minifigures included in this set: Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown and Marty McFly.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESWe will get the figures out of the way so we can focus on the pictures of the real prize in this set. Both figures come in their clothing from the first movie. With Doc it’s his 1985 self, so he is wearing the biohazard suit he was seen wearing in the first part of the movie.  Marty comes with his blue jeans, jean jacket over his button-up shirt, and, of course, his “life preserver” vest.  Both Doc and Marty included two faces: one happy and one scared — yay for choices! Marty also includes his skateboard from the first movie.  I do wish LEGO went the extra mile to give us some extra pieces to turn our two heroes into the way they looked in part 2 and 3. I plan to get some cowboy parts to make them look like they did in part 3.

The Delorean has a lot of great parts that really add to the overall BTTF feel. First, we will start with the base time machine from BTTF 1. The car itself is mostly gray. Along each side of the car you can see the tubing that I am sure has something to do with fancy time traveling. Also we have the two large black exhausts on the rear, which might be my favorite part of the outside of the car. Or it might have to be the “OUTATIME” license plate.

To get in the car we have two gullwing doors, just like on the real car. The design for the doors is so simple, yet so perfect at the same time. Once inside, of course, you can see the flux capacitor. It’s a really nice printed brick. We also have a printed brick with the time circuit’s time display. Again, I wish LEGO would have given us a bit more with that spot; I would have liked to be able to change them out for the different dates from the movies.

To turn the Delorean into the car from BTTF 2, all we have to do is change out the license plate to the 2015 plate, add our Mr. Fusion, and fold the wheels under for flying mode. LEGO did go the extra step this time and included some clear bricks to make the car look like it can float.

The Delorean from BTTF 3 is my all-time favorite from the movies. We have to remove Mr. Fusion, change the wheels to the red set included, remove one brick from the hood, and then plug on the vacuum-tube hood piece used in the movie to replace the time-control microchip. I wish LEGO could have somehow given us the white walls for our red 1955 set of tires.

Overall, I think this set is a really great one. There are some nitpicks I had with it, but, even with those, I am very happy to have this set in my collection. Now I just need the Cuusoo Ecto-1 Set to hurry up and get here!
