First Look – Mattel Total Heroes: Green Lantern Corps Figure

With the now long-running DCUC/DCIE Four Horsemen line going the way of the Dodo, its time for a new brand of 6-inch DC Superhero figures from Mattel. Today we are getting a look at the first Total Heroes Ultra figure: Green Lantern Corps. We have already started seeing the first waves of the basic retail line of Total Heroes hitting retail now. Check out my review of Hal Jordan and Sinestro here. The basic line retails for $9.99-$12.99, and these Ultra figures come in at a $20 price point, plus shipping. So let’s check out what you get for the extra money.

There are very few changes with the Ultra figure over the basic figure. Just taking a quick look at the figure, you will notice it is the same body we have seen used now several times.

The only modification to the figure is in the hand and head areas. The set comes with three pairs of hands and three heads. Hands include flying, punching, and gripping pairs.  Heads include John Stewart, Tomar-Re, and, for the first time ever, Green Man. The heads pop on and off with ease and have a nice, snug fit. The hands are not as solid on my figure. When I switch them back and forth I never get that “POP” sound letting me know it’s in correctly. And even my figure’s left hands fit a lot looser than the right hands. Hopefully it’s just my figure.

All three head sculpts have a somewhat cartoony look to them, but that is how all the heads have looked in the basic line as well. I really like John’s head; it fits well on the body and looks to be the right size. Now, while I like the sculpt on both Tomar and Green Man, I cannot help thinking they may be a bit undersized for the body. The paint on the masks is hit or miss on my heads, but not terrible.

The figure has a much more classic Green Lantern costume as opposed to the Nu52 design that Hal Jordan came with. While I do love this costume more, it is kind of bummer for the Lanterns to not match. The green is much brighter on the Corp figure and has a metallic shine to it. So if six hands and three heads were not enough accessories, have no fear — this set comes with a construct “beam” and three different end attachments: a giant fist, a spinning saw blade, and a clamp that does not really clamp. The bad thing is the “beam” is far too heavy to really use in any kind of normal pose on your shelf. I wish they would have either gone with a lighter plastic like they used on the attachments, or just put clips on the attachments themselves and drop the “beam.” You can get some fun poses, but it takes a lot of work. It also works on any other basic figure.

These may never be as “good” as DCUC figures, but they do have their upsides and are just fun toys. I have enjoyed Total Heroes so far and look forward to more figures.

This figure goes on sale on 3/17/2014 at 9 AM, PST, at Matty Collector. So RUN, don’t walk, and get yourself some of these to make your own Green Lantern Corps!

Thanks to Mattel for sending this early sample for us to take a look at.
