Hey kids, are you GI Joe fans? I know, I know, who isn’t, amirite? Being a devout disciple and avid fan of Larry Hama’s seminal work on the GI Joe: A real American Hero comic from the ’80s, it takes a lot for me to accept another take on the franchise. But I want to point out the story that I put in the same league as Hama’s work. It’s gritty, it’s dirty, it’s mean, it’s about as real as it gets. Cobra: The Last Laugh by Mike Costa and Christos Gage takes undercover Joe operative Chuckles and turns him into a fully rounded, well-crafted character whom you will get to know intimately over the course of the story. You don’t have to read any other modern Joe comics to understand this story, and you only need a passing knowledge of Joes to enjoy the story. It’s just that good.
