If you are toy collector or a Marvel toy collector, then you know that there is a crazy-ass list that was made public via someone who had access to Hasbro’s customer service website. Before we get going, I have not confirmed this list with anyone at Hasbro or their PR company. I have not reached out them to validate the list. And we are currently discussing if we should.
What we did agree on is that I have to write some thoughts about the leaked list. In order to do that, I need to publish it. I’m doing that. Below.
First things first. Everyone may or may not know that the next big Marvel movie is Thor, then Captain America, and then Guardians of the Galaxy, I think that order is right. And for those of you that know nothing about the Guardians of the Galaxy, here’s a bit of history:
Guardians of the Galaxy are a Marvel Comics superhero team that first appeared in 1969 in Marvel SuperHeroes number 18, created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan. Since then they’ve appeared in a ton of comics, usually Avengers. In the past decade, the Guardians have popped back into existence and are as popular as ever. With changes.
The new Guardians don’t include any of the originals; they do have a number of really old characters, some from Marvel back in the day, but none of the original crew. Instead, the current roster consists of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax, and Groot. These are some good, old fashioned cosmic Marvel heroes that not a lot of people have ever heard about. Well they will — these comic members will essentially be the members in the 2014 movie.
You might be asking yourself, how in the name of Groot do any of these guys make a blockbuster summer movie? Easy. Outer space cosmic space operas, when done right, are super cool. And just to make certain that this ties into the comics and Marvel movieverse, we’ll throw in Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, to bring the room together; kinda like a rug. Iron Man won’t guarantee the film’s success, but it will help people identify with the property. I expect big widescreen fun from this movie. I expect to see one of my favorite Marvel heroes finally take front and center. No, not Rocket Raccoon (he’s number 2), but Star-Lord.
Now that we’ve had some history here, you’ll understand the importance of the next item.
Above I made a statement about Iron Man being in the movie. I have not researched this, or confirmed it, but he is in the comic. I would only conclude he is in the movie. And the results of the Hasbro list confirm that conclusion. I’m guessing these will be comic costumes since the Star-Lord figure was a comic figure. If the list is legit.
Diving into the list, we can confirm that there will be a lot of Rocket Raccoon. And why not? He’s an anthropomorph, and those things are always popular with kids and adults, especially when they are snarky. The list also shows a lot of Star-Lord, and why not? He’s the leader of this team and he’s a super-cool character. Color me excited. We already had a sneak peak of a Star-Lord Marvel Legend, and the abundance of listings below is positive.
Treating this list as more speculative spoiler fun, there are three villains listed. Thanos, I think we all knew he was a part of the film. Korath (the Pursuer), I did not know about; the Badoon, of course, because they are the sworn enemy of the Guardians; and lastly Ronan (the Accuser). To pretend a little, this is pure awesomeness that all these characters are possibly in the movie. If they aren’t, that’s cool too, but if they are, awesome! Marvel is setting the groundwork for some really killer cosmic tie-ins through cartoons, games, and TV. And to put some honey on there, one of the three-packs is vs. Nova Soldier, meaning that Nova is not a singular character, but they might touch on the Nova Corps.
Let’s recap before this gets too out of hand. The list below is a repost of a repost of a repost that was taken from a screendump that someone gathered from Hasbro’s Customer Service Portal. I have not reached out to anyone in Hasbro or their PR to confirm if this list is real. Nor will I for the purpose of this article. This article represents my excited amateur opinion about a list of possible toys and characters from a thoroughly enjoyed Marvel Property.
