Toy Fair 2012 – DC Universe

Mattel made their DC Universe presentation today at Toy Fair, and there were some great, unexpected reveals.

CLUB INFINITE EARTHS:

We saw production samples of the previously announced Atrocitus, as well as Jay Garrick Flash including a shiny, vac-metal hat!  We also got our first look at a scale Metron seated in his chair. Metron features hinged wrists, specifically added for Kirby chair-sitting action.

While the 2 UP prototype of Star Boy/Man had already been shown, we did get the first look at his alternate, unmasked head.  Poison Ivy, previously announced, was shown for the first time as a 2UP proto. If you guessed ‘green’, you win the flesh tone lottery.

In addition to those subscription figures we already knew about, several new figures were revealed for the first time:

Black Mask, Mirror Master, and Platinum with Tin will all be coming as regular, monthly figures. Yes, Tin features only 3 points of articulation- neck and shoulders- but he is a fantastic sculpt and a good size.  Rocket Red was revealed as one of the upcoming “oversize” figures. He shares some tooling with Atom Smasher, so he’s going to be big. Some will be more happy about that than others. Your mileage may vary.

DC UNIVERSE ALL STARS:

Little news was announced for the 6″ retail line. We got to see samples of DCnU Superman and Flash, along with the Supergirl repaint. Also announced was that the Steel figure from the old DCSH line will be re-released with this retail mix.

Mattel continued to hone the message about what type of characters will appear in each line.  The retail line will be heavily Superman/Batman, with other new look, A-listers.  When we asked about characters in the vein of Wally West Flash or 90’s Aquaman– who would seem to be retail A-listers as well as fan favorites– we were told they were much more likely to appear in the subscription.  When asked about the Super Powers deco’d Penguin shown at NYCC, it was stated he would be very unlikely to appear in the subscription, since Mattel would like to keep simple repaints out of the subscription. So, that is heartening indeed.

DARK KNIGHT MOVIE MASTERS:

The first wave of 6″ Movie Masters for the film will feature 6 figures that will each come with a piece to build a Collect and Connect Bat Signal that actually lights up and projects a Bat Symbol. The first three figures, Batman, Bane, and Catwoman, were shown. The other three figures will be announced in the coming months.

JLU:

The much demanded 3-packs, that seem to have died so many times before, were given new life. It was officially announced that ALL of them will become available as Mattycollector.com exclusives for a price of $30 each. How they finally managed to swing it, we may never know, but Scott Nietlich did say that without the persistent, vocal demand by collectors it could not have happened.
