First Look – Masters of the Universe Classics The Goddess

mattel_logoThe Goddess is closing out 2009 in the Masters of the Universe line as the December bonus figure and MOTU fans, fans of the color green, action figure collectors, Baena and just about everyone else is pretty excited. She is green and she is the Goddess. But not the GREEN Goddess, that is simply an obscure salad dressing. I mean, she is a green Goddess as she is green and she is a goddess but from a title standpoint she is just The Goddess. The green speaks for itself. Okay, okay, enough on that. The important thing is though that He-Fans have been waiting decades to get a figure of this [formerly] obscure Masters of the Universe character that originated in the beloved mini-comics. I have to say, for essentially being a repaint of the Teela figure, the Four Horsemen and Mattel really did her justice.

For the Pre-Filmation mini-comic fans, Sharella here is kind of a big deal. She is the one responsible for training He-Man and giving him his heroic weapons. In fact, her biography (one of the best so far) goes on to say that the Goddess has been training He-Men as guardians of the Power Sword for centuries. This is the kind of cool backstory that we are getting with this line and it makes the MOTU-verse all the more rich.

I am going to let the pictures do a lot of the talking for this one, but, even though the Goddess is mostly the Teela figure, she is not really just a simple repaint. The reuse is spot on as it matches the source material perfectly. I also really like the color deco on her too, her body suit and armor really fit the overall theme of her character and it nicely done. Her eyes are very striking as well, though, I am sure some will notice that she does have pupils, something that the discerning fan is aware the original source material is lacking.

Another cool thing is that she comes with the same requisite Snake Armor that was included with Teela. The cool part of this for me (aside from being, you know, how the character was portrayed) is that I can now display that cool head dress. See, I like my Teela without the head dress better, but it is essential for the Goddess (in fact she does not include the alternate Teela head) so I now have a great way to have the Snake Armor on the shelf.

The biggest aesthetic point of this figure is that she is cast in a translucent green plastic. You can’t really see through the plastic as such but it does let light pass through giving her a bit of a mystical “shimmering” look. I really dig this and after getting the glow-in-the-dark Scare Glow last month, the MOTUC display is getting really diverse.

For her accessories she comes with the heroic weapons of He-Man: the battle axe, shield and harness, a repaint of the Teela shield and the Staff of the Elders. These are all nice little inclusions that find their roots in the mini-comics, though, while I like the Staff of the Elders, I might display the Goddess with the Staff of Ka the came with Teela. It just fits better for my tastes, I think. Ah, I will probably flip-flop between the two many times before I decide.

So, as we now have two MOTUC bonus figures under our belt (the first being October’s Zodak), I think the program will be a success. Once people have this green lady in hand, I think most will really dig her. She is a great example of what the bonus figures are capable of and she goes miles to help diversify the mythology – another one out of “Preternia”.

Don’t forget to be on Matty Collect on December 15th to grab your Goddess (behave!) and note that she is NOT included with the 2009 subscription so I imagine traffic will be heavy that day.
