Gallery Spotlight – Avatar Movie Masters

With the highly-anticipated movie still a couple of months away, we have the opportunity to bring you a few looks at some of the Mattel action figure product coming out to support the blockbuster-budget Avatar. First up we have some pictures of the new 6 inch scale Avatar Movie Masters figures of Colonel Miles Quaritch and Avatar Jake Sully – check them out!

As you know, Faithful Fwoosh Staffer Matthew K already brought us a fantastic First Look at these figures that you can check out in his review. He did a fantastic job reviewing the figures so this is meant for a photo gallery entry that we will keep archived here at the Fwoosh. There are a couple of points I do want to hit on though.

  1. Mattel is supporting the movie with two separate scales of figures. The first, the Movie Masters are in the 1:12 or 6-inch scale. These are the more “premium” figures with detailed paint applications, super-articulation (think DCUC for the most part) and a more collector-oriented target audience.
  2. The 1:18 (that is 3 3/4 scale) will have tons of accessories and beasts and vehicles to accompany the figures (we will be getting to those soon).
  3. Both scales will feature exclusive i-Tag accessories that, with the help of downloadable software and a webcam, lets you interact with 3D models of the characters and vehicles online. You can read all about the technology here.
  4. There will be several 1:12 figures that will be released, so far it looks like most people are finding the two featured here – Col. Quaritch and Avatar Jake Sully.

Overall, these are nice 6-inch figures that should be able to interact with most of your DC Classics, Ghost Busters, Marvel Legends, et al. Fans of the movie will, no doubt, enjoy then, but it looks like they will have great potential for army building guys in any one of the aforementioned universes. Also, the customizing potential looks to be very high, especially in the area of the military figures.

As far as overall sculpt, paint and articulation goes, I find these to be a hybrid of the DCUC and Hasbro Marvel Legends lines. The articulation is pretty much right down the middle, sharing from both lines with hip hinges and “elbros”. They are also right in line with other Movie Masters figures from Mattel (including The Dark Knight and Ghost Busters). Thus, some might find them a touch too small to use in the DCUC world, others might be okay with it.

It will be interesting to see how Avatar performs as a movie this winter – there is a lot of hype and a lot of expectations attached to it. The figures look to be appearing mostly at Toys R Us locations now and seem to be moving pretty briskly.

*Thanks for checking out the gallery and thanks so much to Mattel for sending these along. We will have more Looks at more Avatar product coming soon!
